Geese Mitigation

1. Can the government clarify that any specialty trained geese management breed K9 dogs can be used?

While other K9 breeds may be trained and effective in the management of geese, based on independent research as well as the endorsement of the U.S. Humane Society, The Coalition Against The Destruction of Canada Geese, and GeesePeace, trained Border Collies are highly preferred. Additionally, due to the acute conditions of some of our patients, the facility has concerns about the use of certain dog breeds (i.e. German Shepherds, Doberman Pinchers, Rottweilers, etc…)

2. Can the government provide further explanation in regards to peak periods requiring 3 handlers and 3 dogs for up to 12 hours a day? Does this mean each handle and dog works 4 hours or does the government expect each team to work 12 hrs a day?

The facility’s expectation is that the services of up to 3 dogs and 3 handlers may be required for up to 12 hours a day (total of up to 36 labor hours per day); how the requirement is met is considered means and methods.

3. Can the government provide expectations for the total number of hours of service that is expected per service CLNS number? Is the interpretation of 4 hrs per item correct?

The expectations for total number of hours of service per CLNS is based on a very fluid and dynamic requirement. As the requirement is unpredictable in nature, the successful vendor must be flexible and readily adaptable to meet the demand. The interpretation should not be based on the number of hours per item, but rather on the successful of completion of the requirement at that time. Hours invested could range from few to many (up to 12 per day) depending on what the requirement calls for at that particular time.

4. Has the government used K9 Geese Management at this VA in the past 12 months?

This facility has not utilized this methodology previously; only in demonstrations and assisting with nest management. However, other federal facilities have demonstrated success utilizing this approach to geese management within the last 12 months.
