18.0 Dental Chair Heterotrophic Plate Count Sampling:

18.1 Dental unit waterlines (i.e., plastic tubing that carries water to the high-speed handpiece, air/water syringe, and ultrasonic scaler) promote bacterial growth and development of biofilm due to the presence of long narrow-bore tubing, inconsistent flow rates, and the potential for retraction of oral fluids. Dental health care personnel and patients could be placed at risk of adverse health effects if water is not appropriately treated.

18.2 The contractor is responsible for all labor, tools, and materials required for the collection, sampling, shipping, and testing of the samples, Dental Waterline testing for Bacteria Heterotrophic Plate Count. Waterline testing is to be accomplished by a laboratory certified (EPA or state) to perform environmental testing.

18.3 The contractor shall collect water samples for testing from each dental chair waterline. The contractor shall use Heterotrophic Plate Count. The laboratory will provide a report indicating the analytical results for each sample submitted. Results will be calculated in terms of colony forming units (CFU/mL).

18.4 The contractor will draw samples for laboratory analysis between the hours of 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. under the supervision of VA Medical Facility Support Personnel. Actual date and chairs to be sampled and tested will be given to the contractor in advance depending on dental workload.
