About this file
This document outlines the salient characteristics and specifications for a Patient Ceiling Lift System procurement at Bedford VAMC. The government seeks to upgrade existing Guldmann Ceiling Lifts and requires a domestic equivalent system capable of supporting three different size configurations: 3m x 3m (13 units), 4m x 4m (6 units), and 4m x 3m (5 units). The lift system must support up to 605 lbs capacity with a motor speed of 60 millimeters per second, WiFi connectivity for usage monitoring and service alerts, mechanical and electrical emergency lowering with overload protection, and operating noise levels between 50-60 dB(A). The system utilizes 24V NiMH batteries with automatic activation and approximately 2-hour charge times, housed in impact-resistant, flame-retardant casing with continuous in-rail charging capability.
The procurement includes 25 medium hanger bars (lifting capacity up to 825 lbs with four attachment points), 25 XY ceiling hoist systems providing multi-directional room coverage, one 4m x 4m trainer module motor capable of reducing body weight up to 100 kg for therapeutic exercise with 30-minute session limits, and installation services across 25 rooms. Installation requirements include labor and hardware, weight testing and certification, removal of existing lift systems, light cleaning, and design/drafting with stamped engineering calculations. The government also requires comprehensive onsite training for operating clinicians. This is a Sources Sought Notice for market research purposes only, not a solicitation for proposals, and interested firms must be registered in SAM and provide company information, performance documentation, socio-economic status, place of manufacture, and relevant company documentation to kurt.fritz@va.gov.

Salient characteristics
Patient Ceiling Lift System (3m x 3m QTY 13) (4m x 4m QTY 6) (4m x 3m QTY 5)
· Lift Capacity: Supports up to 605 lbs for safe handling of a wide range of patients.
· Motor Speed: 60 millimeters every second or better.
· Horizontal Motor Option: Can include a motorized horizontal traverse along the ceiling rail, operated via hand control or IR remote.
· Digital System Integration: Supports Wi‑Fi connectivity for usage monitoring, service alerts, and data logging through a centralized digital platform.
· Safety Features: Includes mechanical and electrical emergency lowering, emergency stop, and overload protection.
· Operating Noise: 50 to 60 dB(A).
· Battery System: Uses 24 V NiMH batteries with automatic activation, soft start/stop, and charge times of about 2 hours (for this capacity class).
· Main body dimensions: 580 mm × 345 mm × 156 mm.
· Impact‑resistant.
· Flame‑retardant housing.
· Continuous In-Rail Charging.
Medium Hanger Bar (QTY 25)
· Lifts up to 825 lbs.
· Four attachment points for a safe, stable, and comfortable lift.
· Works with ceiling and mobile lifts and fits standard slings.
· Strong, rust‑resistant metal covered with soft, easy‑to‑clean foam.
· Lightweight (4 lbs) and easy to handle.
· Medium size (~24″ wide) XY Ceiling Hoist System (QTY 25)
· Reaches the whole room, not just a straight line.
· Easy to move the lift in any direction with minimal effort.
· Works well with different room layouts, even if furniture changes.
· Flush or integrated with the ceiling.
· Complete kits, making setup straightforward.
4m x 4m Trainer Module Motor (QTY 1)
· Reducing bodyweight, relieves up to 100 kg (220 lbs),
· Built into the ceiling hoist added to system, controlled via the hand control interface.
· Safe exercise sessions: positioning lock and fall protection, enabling standing exercises, squats, steps, balance training, and sit-to-stand movements.
· 30-minute training limit: each session lasts up to 30 minutes per full battery charge, with clear indicators for weight relief and remaining time. After session, will automatically resume normal lift mode.
· Simple operation: Caregivers select weight-relief level and monitor progress using the digital hand control screen.
· Battery management: 1 hour of charge delivers about 10 minutes of training time. When training ends, it reverts to standard lifting and resumes charging.
Ceiling Lift Setup (QTY 25)
· Must be built-in to ceiling structure.
Installation (QTY 25)
· Install lift systems in 25 rooms.
· Labor and the hardware necessary to install the lift systems.
· The installer is not licensed to perform the excluded construction-trade work and is not responsible for hiring specific contractors or trades to perform it.
· Must support up to Level II that is identified in the Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA).
· Perform light cleaning of the work area.
· If above-ceiling work permits are required, the facility must provide them.
· Perform weight testing and certification of the installed lift systems.
· Removal of existing lift systems.
Design / Drafting
· Stamped Engineering Calculations Training
· Comprehensive onsite training program for the operating clinicians as required.
