About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file containing contractor inquiries and VA responses regarding the Brockton Police Furniture & Sound Management project at VA Boston Healthcare System's Brockton Campus. The file addresses technical specifications for the sound masking system installation, which is a key component of the broader furnishings and interior design contract.
The primary technical details exchanged concern the sound masking system installation specifications. The ceiling is ACT Armstrong 3253 Optima at 7 feet 10 inches in height, with the sound masking anticipated as a single zone due to individual offices being separated by demountable partitions that do not extend to deck height. The VA confirmed plenum space availability above the acoustical ceiling grid, with approximately 3 feet minimum clearance overall, though the center area has approximately 1.5 inches of clearance. The plenum measurements vary by building section: the south side provides 31 inches from ceiling grid to rib (38 inches full length), the center provides 33 inches to rib (39 inches full length), and the north side provides 34 inches to rib (41 inches full length). The VA indicated that the sound masking vendor would need to engineer the cannister design under the contract and recommended in-plenum speaker installation above the acoustical ceiling tile as the preferred solution given the low ceiling height. The file also references CAD plans and elevation drawings as supporting documentation for contractor review.

BROCKTON POLICE OPEN MARKET QUESTIONS
1. Can you forward an AutoCAD?
2. What material is the ceiling?
3. Do you have a diagram of the sound masking zones?
4. Do you have a drawing for the sound masking cannisters?
5. What is the ceiling height?
Where should the wall-mounted head-end control be located? Please see the attached elevation drawing and cut sheets for reference.
We will need the ceiling plan. Are you able to provide this? What type of ceiling is installed?
CAD Plan attached.
ACT – Armstrong 3253 Optima Attached PDF has area for sound masking, this will most likely be 1 zone as the individual offices are separated by DIRT partitions which do not go to deck height.
We do not have a drawing for the masking cannister. This would need to reviewed/engineered under this contract by the vendor for an Acoustical Engineer as there are various types. We have previously had Cambridge Sound complete installations on our campus.
Ceiling Height is 7’ 10”
Based on the ceiling height below, the sound masking installer has some concerns about the soundmasking speakers should be installed. Can you please pass on to the end user and let us know what they think.
Thanks for this - a 7'10" ceiling is pretty low - we would be much better served to install soundmasking speakers above the acoustical ceiling tile - If we have the time - we could re-quote this using our in plenum system - which means the masking speakers would be installed above the acoustical ceiling tile. And would provide a better solution than cutting in speakers into the acoustical ceiling. We would need to confirm they have a plenum space that is at least 3-5' is there someone local who can check into that for us? There is an image of the above plenum masking in the attached document -
For the sound masking – The building has a roof slope from north to south.
South side of building:
From the top of ceiling grid to rib is 31 ¼” Full length is 38 ¼” Center of building:
From the top of ceiling grid to rib is 33 ¼” Full length is 39 ¼” North side of building:
From top of ceiling grid to rib is 34 ¼” Full length is 41 ¼” Overall, yes, we have a minimum of 3 ½ ft of clearance space above the ceiling grid. It is a little tight at the center as there will be about ½ inch of clearance.
