1.01 DEFINITIONS
A. When the native soil in the trench is not rock, rocky, or otherwise unsuitable, it may be used for pipe embedment.
B. Unsuitable material is defined as solid or loose rock per these specifications, soils with rocks larger than 1 1/2 inches in the largest dimension, or otherwise unsuitable soils that are incapable of properly supporting the pipe.

1. The inclusion of a bid item and estimated quantity for imported pipe embedment in the
Bid Schedule indicates that importing pipe embedment is probable.
2. However, the exclusion of this item from the Bid Schedule does not preclude the possibility that importing pipe embedment will be required, merely that it is not anticipated.
3. If unanticipated imported pipe embedment is required, unit prices shall be negotiated between the CONTRACTOR and the CONTRACTING OFFICER.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 Pipe Embedment Definition:
A. Pipe embedment is defined as that material required to bring the trench bottom up to grade and that material placed alongside and above pipe to a level of at least 6 inches over the top of the pipe. The pipe embedment area is divided into three zones as defined below:
1. Bedding: Bedding is that portion of pipe embedment zone beneath the pipe. If the native soil is suitable for bedding the pipe without over- excavation, the bottom of the trench shall be accurately shaped such that one fourth of the pipe circumference is provided with uniform bearing and support for each section of the entire length of the pipe. Imported bedding material shall likewise be placed to provide uniform and adequate longitudinal support under the pipe. Bedding material shall be placed and compacted in lifts not to exceed 6 inches in loose measure.
2. Haunching: Haunching is that portion of the pipe embedment zone from the bottom of the pipe to the springline of pipe. Haunching material shall be placed and consolidated to provide adequate side support to the pipe while avoiding both vertical and lateral displacement of the pipe from proper alignment.
3. Initial Backfill: Initial backfill is that portion of the pipe embedment zone from the springline of the pipe to a minimum level of 6 inches over the top of the pipe. Initial backfill material shall be placed and compacted in lifts not to exceed 6 inches in loose measure. Compaction shall be performed in a manner to avoid damage and disturbance of the embedded pipe.
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Place bedding material, initial backfill and fill below pipe bedding in layers of uniform thickness not greater than six inches or as shown on the Drawings.
B. Thoroughly compact each layer by means of a suitable vibrator or mechanical tamper.
C. In excavations below normal depth or where unsuitable materials are excavated, gravel borrow shall be used unless ground water makes such usage not practical; if such is the case, then screened gravel shall be used.
D. No stone 2" in diameter or larger shall be allowed within 12" of the pipe.
E. Where soft silt and slay soils are encountered the trench shall be excavated 6-inches below the normal bedding and backfilled with 6-inches of compacted sand.
F. No stone or rock greater than 12 inches measured at any point shall be placed in the trench backfill.
G. The following schedule gives the minimum bedding requirements for various types of pipe.
Dimensions refer to distance below bottom of pipe.
D.I. Pipe 6 inches minimum gravel borrow.
PVC or P.E. Pipe 6 inches minimum screened gravel.
02228 - 4
H. The following schedule gives the minimum backfill requirements for various types of pipes.
D.I. Pipe Gravel borrow 6 inches minimum PVC or P.E. Pipe 6 inches minimum screened gravel over the top of the pipe.
I. Unless specified in the plans or as approved by the COR, all fill material shall be compacted to within 95 percent of the maximum Modified Standard Proctor Value.
J. Fill shall be placed in lifts no greater than 6 inches. In particular this shall apply to fill placed beneath the well house building.
K. Trench where rock excavation is encountered extending below the bottom of the pipe, shall be excavated at least 6 inches deeper than the pipe invert and refilled to the required elevation with sand or crushed stone. [Payment for this fill material shall be considered incidental to the rock excavation and no additional payment shall be made.]
