DESCRIPTION

SUBGRADE The subgrade for the sidewalks shall be shaped parallel to the proposed surface of the walks and shall be thoroughly rolled and tamped. All depressions occurring shall be filled with suitable material and again rolled or tamped until the surface is smooth and hard.

FOUNDATION After the subgrade has been prepared, a foundation of gravel shall be placed upon it. After being wetted and thoroughly rolled and tamped, the foundation shall be at least eight (8) inches in thickness and four (4) inches below and parallel to the proposed surface of the walk, except that at driveways it shall be six (6) inches below and parallel to the proposed surface of the walk. The gravel foundation shall be moistened before concrete is placed. Gravel and other unwanted materials shall be removed from adjacent excavated areas to a depth of at least six.” Tree roots in the excavated areas shall be properly root pruned according to industry best practices and will be inspected by a City Certified Arborist. Forms shall be kept at least four” away from trees.

TREE PITS Existing Tree Pits will be modified to create a reasonable area that promotes proper tree growth. New tree pits may be added to sidewalk areas at the discretion of the City of Salem. Modified or new tree pit dimensions and locations shall be approved by the City Engineer, or his designee. All tree pits shall have a flexible porous paving surface. See Section IV Trees for additional information.

FORMS Side and transverse forms shall be smooth, free from warp, of sufficient strength to resist springing out of shape, of a depth to conform to the thickness of the proposed walk, and of a type satisfactory to the Engineer. All mortar or dirt shall be completely removed from the forms that have been previously used. The forms shall be well staked and thoroughly braced and set to the established lines with their upper edge conforming to the grade of the finished walk which shall have sufficient pitch from the outside edge of the walk to provide for surface drainage but which shall not exceed a slope of 1.5%, with a construction tolerance of +/-0.5 % (2.0% maximum), unless otherwise directed. All forms shall be oiled before placing concrete.

CONCRETE The concrete shall be poured in alternate slabs thirty (30) feet in length except as otherwise ordered. The slabs shall be separated by transverse preformed expansion joint fillers onehalf (1/2) inch thick. Preformed expansion joint filler shall be placed adjacent to, or around existing structures where directed. Preformed waterproofing membrane shall be placed against building foundations, where directed. On the foundation as specified above the concrete shall be placed in such quantity that after being thoroughly rammed in place it shall be four (4) inches in depth and at driveways six (6) inches in depth. The concrete shall be worked and floated to give a smooth, uniform, and attractive surface finish. Concrete shall be transported from mixer to place of final deposit as rapidly and practicable by methods which prevent separation of ingredients, and which minimize re-handling. Re-tempering concrete will not be allowed. The surface of all concrete sidewalks shall be uniformly scored into block units of areas not more than thirtysix (36) square feet as directed. The depth of the scoring shall be at least onequarter (1/4) of the thickness of the sidewalk. The application of neat cement to surfaces to hasten hardening is prohibited. The finishing of concrete surfaces shall be done by experienced and competent cement finishers approved by the Engineer.

When completed, the walks shall be protected from traffic and weather for at least four (4) days. When pouring concrete driveway aprons, concrete shall be typically placed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so the abutter access will be restored by the weekend, any deviation from this sequence of work shall be approved in advanced in writing by the City Engineer, or his designee. Curing shall be by an approved moist curing method or by spraying with an approved curing compound. No concrete shall be mixed while the air temperature is below thirtythree degrees Fahrenheit (33 deg. F). In no case shall concrete be laid on a frozen foundation.

FIELD TESTS Sets of four (4) cylinders may be taken at random by the Engineer during the progress of the work, in conformity with ASTM Methods, Cthirty-one, two (2) of which shall be broken at seven (7) days and two (2) at twentyeight (28) days. The taking and breaking of the cylinders shall be at the City's expense. Slump tests will be made in the field by the Contractor at the director of the Engineer. The supplier of readymix concrete shall provide the City with an affidavit that the concrete supplied to the job conforms to these specifications.

PROTECTION The Contractor shall keep some of his own personnel or hire police protection, at his own expense, on the jobsite to protect the newly poured concrete from vandalism and injury until the concrete has sufficient set to minimize the chances of damage. Should any damage inadvertently occur the Contractor shall replace the entire square or squares affected.

CURING Immediately after the finishing operations have been completed and as soon as marring of the concrete will not occur, the entire surface of the newly placed concrete shall be covered and cured in accordance with one of the following methods:

1. Moist Curing:

Initial Curing: Strips of burlap saturated with water shall be placed on the fresh concrete surface carefully to avoid marring, strips to overlap at least three (3) inches. This burlap shall be kept thoroughly and continuously wet by sprinkling it with a fine spray of water until it is removed.

Final Curing: After 24 hours a second layer of burlap shall be added. This double layer shall remain in place and shall be kept thoroughly and continuously saturated with water for a period of four (4) days. Cotton mats may be used for final curing if approved by the Engineer.

2. Waterproof Paper Curing: The top surface and sides of the sidewalk shall be entirely covered with waterproof paper. Each paper cover shall not be less than 20 nor more than seventy-five feet in length and shall be of such width that, when in place, it will extend to at least eighteen inches beyond the edges of the slab to be covered. All rips or holes occurring in the paper covers while in use shall be immediately repaired to render them airtight. The paper shall be left in place for a period of 72 hours or longer, if necessary to obtain the required strength. The surface of the sidewalk shall be moist when the paper is placed.

3. Impervious Membrane Curing: After finishing operations have been completed, and immediately after the free water has left the surface, the surface of the slab shall be completely coated and sealed with a uniform layer of white pigmented curing compound. The compound shall be completely coated and sealed with a uniform layer of white pigmented curing compound. The compound shall be applied in a 2-coat continuous operation and at a total coverage of not less than one gallon per 150 sq. ft. of surface. The compounds shall be applied by means of a mechanical pressure sprayer, approved by the Engineer, to form a uniform, continuous, coherent film that shall not check, crack, or peel and shall be free of pin holes or other imperfections. The curing compound shall be of such character that the film will harden within 30 minutes after application. Should the film become damaged from any cause within the required curing period, the damaged portions shall be repaired immediately with additional compound. The treated surface shall be protected by the Contractor from injury for a period of at least 3 days. All traffic, foot or otherwise, will be considered injurious to the film of the applied compound.

4. White Polyethylene Sheeting: The general requirements for the use of white polyethylene sheets shall be those for waterproof paper curing above.

5. Curing in Cold Weather: During cold weather, when the air temperature may be expected to drop below 40F, a sufficient supply of loose dry hay or straw or other suitable blanketing material for covering shall be provided along the line of the work, and at any time when the air temperature may be expected to reach the freezing point during the day or night, the material so provided shall be spread to a sufficient depth to prevent freezing of the concrete. The period such protection shall be maintained shall be not less than 5 days or until the concrete has hardened thoroughly.
