Requirements / Specifications: Penning trap superconducting magnet replacement 1 Version 1.0 (2019)

TITLE: Penning trap superconducting magnet replacement Requesting Lab/Division/Group: PML/688/10

General Statement of Need The Ion Storage group (688.10) of the Time and Frequency Division carries out experimental research on improving quantum information processing and quantum sensing with trapped ions. This work is supported by Outside Agency (OA) as well as internal NIST support. A unique capability of the NIST Ion Storage group is the ability to form and control large arrays of several hundred trapped ions. This effort employs an ion trap known as a Penning ion trap. A large uniform, stable magnetic field from a superconducting magnet is required for the operation of the NIST Penning trap. The superconducting magnet in the NIST Penning trap set-up has failed. Either the coil of superconducting wire needs to be replaced or the entire magnet dewar must be replaced with a new magnet dewar and coil.
