Confocal Raman Microscope (CRM)

C.1 BACKGROUND

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is a component of the U.S. Department of the Treasury that designs, engraves, and prints U.S. banknote currency and other U.S. security products. Banknote currency manufacturing occurs at the Washington, DC Currency Facility (DCF) and the Western Currency Facility (WCF) in Fort Worth, TX.

The Office of Technology Development Security Features Division (OTD/SFD) has a requirement for a research grade Confocal Raman Microscope (CRM). The CRM will be used to analyze inks, additives, and thin films containing Raman active materials. SFD requires the utility of a CRM as it is a non-destructive microscopy tool used to characterize the components and distribution of Raman active materials in a sample. The CRM measures the interactions between laser light and a sample to determine composition, distribution and surface heights. Currently, SFD has a number of research and development projects looking into materials that can be evaluated by a confocal Raman microscope for future banknote security applications. Using the CRM, the BEP can better develop materials for less spoilage, improve the manufacturing process, and print high quality U.S.

banknotes.
