Specifications for Plywood Boarding

Exterior Plywood should be pressure treated.

Plywood thickness should be 1/2” for window and 5/8” for door. When extra-large window openings are encountered use 5/8” or 3/4” as necessary.

Use fasteners appropriate for structure material to manufacturers recommendation. Fasteners used for wood frame construction should be fastened according to NC residential building code standard for exterior plywood sheathing when exterior façade allows.

Plywood should be secured to the structure in such a manner as to completely cover any openings, for example treated 2x4 boards may be secured around the opening to assist in attaching the plywood in such a way as to fully cover the opening.

All windows and doors except the front door, through which access is made, should be secured. The plywood coverings should be of one continuous piece, when possible, when not possible a piece should be doubled or lapped over the seam.

Boarding of Windows

Where possible no portion of the window should be damaged or removed by or for boarding installation. Any damage necessary to secure the residence should be documented and this office should be notified.

Report of Asbestos Evaluation ESP Project No. 24-00438

265 Duke Drive Site March 20, 2024

1.0 INTRODUCTION

As requested by Rowan County, ESP Associates, Inc. (ESP) provided a North Carolina-certified asbestos inspector to perform on March 13, 2024, an asbestos evaluation on a single single-story residential structure, two free-standing sheds, and modular residential structure located at 265

Duke Drive in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina (see Figure 1).

ESP understands that the asbestos evaluation is being performed for demolition purposes;

therefore, the potential for disturbance of any identified asbestos containing material (ACM) within the structures was identified as being high. Mr. Brandon S. Queen (NC Asbestos Inspector

#13095) performed the asbestos evaluation while Mr. Christopher J. Ward, Department Manager, provided project supervision and quality control.

2.0 ASBESTOS HOMOGENOUS AREAS AND SAMPLE IDENTIFICATION

One single-family residential structure, two free-standing sheds, and a modular residential structure were identified during the asbestos evaluation.

• Main residential building consisted of wood-framed with wood and vinyl siding construction with crawlspace (see site photographs in Appendix A). The flooring consisted of wood planks, vinyl floor planks, and wood sheeting, while interior walls were composed of wallboard with joint compound. The ceilings were composed of wood-framing, batt insulation, drop ceiling tiles, and wallboard with joint compound, while the roof consisted of pitched asphalt shingles and felt paper.

• Free-standing Shed No. 1 consisted of a concrete masonry unit (CMU) block utility shed (see site photographs in Appendix A). The flooring consisted of bare earth, while the interior walls were composed of CMU block and ceiling were composed of wood-framing. The roof consisted of pitched asphalt shingled roof.

• Free standing Shed No. 2 consisted of a standard wood-framed and siding utility shed (see site photographs in Appendix A). The flooring consisted of wood sheeting, while the interior walls and ceilings were composed of wood-framing.

The roof consisted of a pitched asphalt shingled roof.

• Modular residential structure consisted of a metal-framed with metal siding exterior

(see site photographs in Appendix A). The flooring consisted of wood sheeting, floor tiles, and carpet with padding, while the interior walls were composed of wood paneling with batt insulation. The ceilings were composed of wood paneling and batt insulation. The roof consisted of metal paneling with mastics and sealants.

During the on-site asbestos evaluation performed on March 13, 2024, ten representative non-friable and six representative friable homogenous areas (HAs) of suspect ACM were identified and sampled at the sampled structure (i.e., HA-A through HA-P). Non-friable categories of sampled suspect ACM consisted of flooring materials, mastics, caulking, sealants, and roofing materials, while the friable categories of sampled suspect ACM consisted of insulation, ceiling tile, carpet padding, and wallboard with joint compound. General sample locations are depicted in

Figures 1 through 3 while sampled materials are detailed in Table 1.

Thiry-five suspected ACM samples for HA-A through HA-P were collected and shipped to

AmeriSci Environmental Laboratories (AmeriSci) in Richmond, Virginia to be analyzed for asbestos by polarized light microscopy (PLM) using EPA Method 600/R-93/116). See Table 1 for a summary of the asbestos sample analytical results while analytical results are provided in the laboratory report (see Appendix B).

3.0 ASBESTOS SAMPLING RESULTS

According to the AmeriSci analytical results (see Table 1), one sampled non-friable HA tested positive for asbestos above the 1.0% Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) limit.

Additionally, one sampled friable HA tested for trace amounts (<1.0% asbestos).

• HA-A consisted of less than 5,000 square feet (sqft) of gray/white friable wallboard

(negative) with off-white/white friable joint compound (Trace <1.0% Chrysotile) located in all rooms of the main residential structure except for Room 7. HA-A is represented by samples A-1 through A-5; and

• HA-O consisted of approximately 800 sqft of clear/white non-friable roofing sealant (2.0%…
