About this file
This document is a public health advisory from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) regarding environmental safety guidelines for the Au Sable River. The advisory warns about high levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the river's fish and foam, providing specific guidance for recreational activities. The document indicates that while swimming, boating, and fishing are generally acceptable, there are critical health precautions to follow, particularly concerning fish consumption and contact with river foam.
The advisory provides detailed safety recommendations, including not eating non-migratory fish like bass and perch from the river, avoiding foam with potentially high PFAS concentrations, and taking precautions with pets. Visitors are instructed to rinse off after contact with foam, shower after outdoor activities, and prevent pets from drinking foamy water. A QR code is provided to access additional "Eat Safe Fish" guidelines, and contact information for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is listed for those seeking more information about the environmental conditions and health risks.
