ATTACHMENT A: MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS – HEAT EXCHANGER

I. STEAM TO LIQUID VERTICAL FLOODED HEAT EXCHANGERS

A. The heat exchanger skid shall be supplied with Simplex heat exchanger mounted on a single skid. Sizing as shown on schedules. Skid shall be provided with single entry points for liquid inlet, liquid outlet, steam inlet and condensate outlet. The skid shall be hydrostatically tested prior to shipping.

B. The basis of operation shall be as follows. The hydronic water is heated in the u-tubes of a vertical heat exchanger designed to be flooded at approximately 15% at full load in order to have a condensate outlet temperature of 200oF or lower, eliminating energy losses due to flash steam.

C. The steam will be supplied directly to the skid; no pressure reducing station or control valves are required. Condensate can be lifted at the outlet of the skid; no condensate pump required.

D. The process is modulated using an electric fail-safe control valve installed on the condensate outlet that exposes the necessary heating surface by flooding the shell of the heat exchanger proportionally to the instantaneous required load. An outlet temperature setpoint stability of +/- 2oF will be achieved at all flow conditions.

E. The Heat Exchanger shall be capable of control with a minimum water side circulation of 15% of design flow at all times during operation. Circulating pumps supplied by others, are to push the liquid to be heated through the heat exchanger.

F.To facilitate the remote start-stop and lead-lagging of the Maxi-Therm systems, a pre-programmed BACnet control panel shall be provided with all the sensors required to perform the optimal sequence of controls. All parameters of the system can be monitored and modified locally or remotely by the building automation system and troubleshooting by the factory is accomplished via Internet using an Ethernet connection. Remote access to the panel by the customer must be permitted for remote troubleshooting.

Heat exchanger to be built to the TEMA standards in addition to ASME Code (see comparison on last page) and have a 5-year limited warranty.

ASME Code Only vs TEMA – A Brief Comparison Background ASME Section VIII, Division I is a safety Code that was originally developed in the 1930’s and covers all types of pressure vessels, including tanks, columns, towers, reactors, and Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers (HX). It sets minimum requirements with respect to thickness of components and methods of fabrication and testing for the safe operation of a particular piece of relevant equipment.

The TEMA Standard – which stands for the Tubular Exchangers Manufacturers Association – is a specific set of both safe design standards, as well as supplemental requirements and best practices aimed at not only ensuring the safe operation of a Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger at given conditions, but also that the HX will have a longer life-span than if it were fabricated as “Code Only”. In short, when a HX is fabricated in accordance with the TEMA standards, it is a heavier duty product than Code Only.

Examples Given: A 12” Nominal Shell & U-tube Heat Exchanger, designed for 150 PSIG working pressure, to be used in a typical HVAC Steam to Water application.

· Shell Thickness- Code Only: 0.190”, TEMA Min: 0.375” TEMA is 50% heavier duty

· Tube Thickness- Code Only: 0.035”, TEMA Min: 0.049” TEMA is 30% heavier duty

· Gasket Width – Code Only: Not Addressed, TEMA Min: 0.625” to ensure effective seal

· # Tie-Rods in Tube Bundle to ensure adequate stiffness – Code Only: Not Addressed, TEMA Min: (4) Tie-Rods Summary Obviously, it is not possible to cover all aspects of the differences between a Code Only heat exchanger, and one designed and fabricated to the TEMA standards in just a few short lines. But when specifying a shell & tube heat exchanger, requiring that it be built to the TEMA standards in addition to ASME Code, will ensure that the equipment will be fabricated in accordance with the standard that has achieved worldwide acceptance as the authority on the thermal and mechanical design and fabrication of Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers.
