About this file
This is a project specification document and unit price form for the City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works' Highland Park Super Playground Reclaimed Wood Features project (DPW No. 2020-87050), prepared by landscape architect Merritt Chase and issued for bid on November 3, 2021. The project involves the fabrication and installation of reclaimed wood playground furniture components sourced from the city's Forestry Division, specifically wood from tree removals within Highland Park. The reclaimed wood species include Osage Orange, Black Locust, and Oak, with no limitations on grain density and allowances for natural characteristics such as knots, checks, and color variations. The work includes six unit price items: wood stump tables, wood stump stools, log benches with backs, wood stump steppers, fallen logs, and giant fallen logs, with pricing to be provided on a per-unit basis. The project will be executed under coordinated, concurrent multiple contracts alongside separate contracts for the general Highland Park Super Playground construction, playground equipment installation by Kompan, Inc., and poured-in-place safety surfacing installation. A preconstruction conference must be conducted no later than 15 days after contract execution, with progress meetings scheduled at bi-weekly intervals.
All reclaimed wood materials must be pressure-treated with waterborne preservatives in accordance with AWPA U1 standards, using Use Category UC3b for exterior construction not in contact with ground and UC4a for items in contact with ground; preservatives must not contain arsenic or chromium. All fasteners must be stainless steel unless otherwise indicated, including nails complying with ASTM F1667, bolts meeting ASTM A307 or ASTM F593 standards, and wood screws complying with ASME or ICC-ES standards. The contractor must provide submittals including product data for preservative-treated wood, shop drawings for each wood fabrication type, delegated-design submittals with professional engineer analysis for log benches, and verification samples for finish products. Materials must be stored under cover and protected from weather with proper stacking and air circulation. The contractor is responsible for coordination with Owner-performed work (tree removal) and other separate contractors, maintaining site conditions, complying with Pittsburgh's zoning code for work hours, and conducting required pre-installation conferences before each construction activity.
