STATEMENT OF WORK

Period of Performance: September 1, 2014-September 30, 2017

C. Statement of Work

C1. Background and Need- Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, 2009) data indicate that a disproportionate number of Asian American workers suffer fatal occupational injuries. Of the 775 Asian American workers who died as a result of an injury incurred while on the job from 1999-2003, the majority (640) were foreign born rather than native born (135). The leading cause of death for Asian American workers was an assault or violent act, accounting for over 50% of fatal workplace injuries, with 46% of the fatalities for Asian workers being homicides. Asian American workers in retail trade were over four times more likely to be fatally injured on the job in comparison to non-Asians, and foreign-born Asian Americans were particularly at risk, with 68% of all homicides to foreign-born Asian workers occurring in the retail industry. Shootings accounted for 80% of workplace homicides for Asian Americans, and a robber was the assailant in 61% of these homicides. South Asian, Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese foreign-born workers are especially at risk for occupational fatalities.

The goals of this project are, in partnership with Chicago community-based organizations, to assess violence prevention practices that are being used in Chicago South Asian American and Korean American retail establishments, and to identify cultural and other barriers to adopting recommendations for preventing workplace violence to foreign-born and native-born Korean and South Asian American retail employees/managers/owners. From this, culturally-competent violence prevention materials will be tailored specifically for Chicago South Asian and Korean American employees/managers/owners, and these products will be disseminated through Chicago South Asian and Korean American community partners, retail businesses, and trade associations.

To accomplish this, the project involves active participation of Chicago South Asian and Korean American retail employee/managers/owners and businesses and community-based partners in all phases of developing/finalizing focus group discussion/interview materials, confirming accuracy of interpretation of data analyses from focus group discussions/interviews, providing feedback on fidelity of prototype violence prevention materials developed from these focus group/interview data, and assisting in developing a plan for disseminating these materials back to the participating retail establishments and more broadly to other Chicago South Asian and Korean American retail businesses, employees/managers/owners, and other community-based organizations.
