STATEMENT OF WORK

PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND ANNUAL SOUTHERN OBESITY SUMMIT

BIRMINGHAM, AL

SEPTEMBER 7-9, 2008

I. Background:

The southern states of the US share many common characteristics such as culture, economic, ethnic, and racial composition that affect the burden of chronic disease and obesity. These challenges provide fertile ground for sharing strategies and seeking solutions to shared problems.

To date, few obesity strategies have included shared plans as multi-state initiatives. While southern states pursue their own obesity prevention strategies, there is no multi-state approach to address the poor obesity outcomes or to compare upstream approaches associated with policy, environmental and system changes.

The Annual Southern Obesity Summit examines existing evidence and identifies what stimulates and sustains innovation in obesity prevention. The Summit serves as the primary vehicle for identifying and disseminating evidence-based and emerging practices in the South, strengthening our capacity to respond to the obesity challenge.

Building on this momentum, the 2008 Summit in Birmingham, Alabama will promote multi-stakeholder approaches to obesity prevention at all levels. Expansion of the event includes an additional state, Missouri, increasing the attendees to 400, conducting a series of State conference calls prior to the event and providing support following the event. Scholarships will target local public health and community based organizations, to advance their role in informing state and federal level policy processes.

II. Purpose:

The purpose of this work is to cooperate with the Texas Health Institute who is sponsoring a Southern Obesity Summit meeting with a goal of convening southern health experts is to disseminate information, discuss best practices, and to create individual state action plans for obesity prevention and reduction and to utilize the information, ideas and issues addressed at the meeting to inform the CDC program decisions surrounding obesity.

3. Share examples of successful implementation strategies.

4. Promote partnerships so obesity prevention efforts can be evaluated and a body of knowledge built nationally.

5. Develop strategies for informing and encouraging policy makers to develop regional strategies for reducing obesity rates.
