About this file

This document is an Ecological Risk Assessment for the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge Lead Shot Site in Milton, Delaware, prepared by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in August 2004. The assessment evaluates the ecological effects of lead shot and associated lead-contaminated soil and sediment at a 27-acre site that was previously operated as a trap range by the Broadkill Sportsman's Club for approximately 40 years.

The study conducted comprehensive environmental testing, including soil and sediment sampling, toxicity tests on earthworms, rye grass, and amphipods, and food chain accumulation models to assess potential ecological risks. Key findings indicate the site was heavily contaminated with lead, with surface soil lead concentrations up to 100,000 mg/kg and shot density up to 68,564 shot/ft². The research evaluated potential threats to various ecological receptors, including terrestrial plants, aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, insectivorous birds and mammals, and waterfowl. Based on the results, preliminary remediation goals were developed to be protective of all species, with a recommended cleanup level of 421 mg/kg lead in soil and sediment.
