About this file

This file is a detailed map of Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, a Michigan state park managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The map illustrates the park's geographic features, infrastructure, and recreational facilities across multiple sections including the Lake Superior shoreline, wilderness areas, and adjacent national forest lands. The park encompasses numerous trails, scenic areas, campgrounds, and visitor facilities distributed throughout the property. Key features include the Presque Isle River area with its waterfalls, the Lake of the Clouds scenic area, multiple rustic and modern campgrounds, ranger stations, trailheads, picnic areas, and a wilderness visitor center. The map designates specific recreational zones including winter sports areas, boat launches, group use areas, and rustic cabins, with trail systems ranging from short day-hikes to extended wilderness routes such as the Big Carp River Trail and Escarpment Trail.

The map includes boundary demarcations between Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties and indicates the time zone transition within the park. Infrastructure elements such as restrooms, public telephones, ski warming shelters, and the Kaug Wudjoo Lodge are marked at strategic locations. The document also incorporates Leave No Trace principles as educational content, outlining seven guidelines for visitor conduct including trail maintenance, campfire safety, waste disposal, and wildlife protection. A cautionary notice regarding the Presque Isle River's hazardous conditions, including strong currents and deep holes, is prominently displayed to address visitor safety concerns in that section of the park.
