ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS

Background and Need

The Research Branch of NIOSH NPPTL currently utilizes advanced respirator test headforms to perform research on the fitting characteristics of different classes of respiratory protection.

Advanced headforms have a silicone facial skin and may be mounted onto a manikin torso. This type of testing is currently performed in a sodium chloride aerosol (NaCl) test chamber. This engineering specification is for the acquisition of a new NaCl test chamber incorporating a tipping test platform. Our headforms with torsos will be mounted onto the tipping platform to simulate a “bending at the waist” motion.

Technical Requirements

1. General Chamber Information

a. The chamber shall be of dimensions: (length x width x height: 63” x 36” x 72”).

b. The chamber shall be built of sturdy framing which can easily be disassembled

(for example, 80/20 aluminum framing or similar type framing).

c. The chamber will not need gas-tight gaskets, as only non-toxic chemicals will be used for testing.

d. The chamber should be built in such a manner to mitigate shaking/vibration/jarring from the mechanical motion of the tilting platform (i.e., by incorporating vibration dampening materials as necessary).

2. Walls

a. All side walls and ceiling are to be of transparent 3/16” thick plastic sheeting

(polycarbonate or equivalent). Alternative thickness can be considered in necessary for the chamber design.

3. Door

a. The chamber shall have a hinged door to be the full height of the chamber and a minimum width of 30”.

4. Floor

a. The floor shall be made of sturdy materials and supports to allow a person to walk on the floor.

b. The chamber shall be assembled to directly sit on the laboratory floor. The chamber will not need wheels or legs.

5. Tipping Mechanism

a. A tipping mechanism shall be supplied to support the weight of a 50 pound manikin.

b. A mechanism such as a harnessing system shall be supplied for securing the manikin to the tipping platform.

c. The tipping mechanism shall be able to tilt the manikin to 90° from its upright starting position and then to return the manikin to its upright starting position.

d. Maximum speed: The tilting mechanism shall be capable of moving the manikin from its upright starting position to the 90° stopping position within 1 second. The tilting mechanism shall also be capable of moving the manikin from its 90° stopping position back to its upright starting position within 1 second.

e. The platform of the tilting mechanism shall be roughly 24” x 11.5”. These dimensions can vary based on the means of securing the manikin to the platform.

f. The platform shall be to the rear of the chamber, leaving 10” of clearance between the back of the manikin to the back wall of the chamber.

g. The test chamber will be filled with a dry NaCl aerosol, which can rust some metallic materials; thus, metallic parts that can rust with NaCl exposure need to be either external to the chamber or somehow protected to prevent rusting. Fans (described in Sect. 7) are replaceable materials and do not need to be protected from rusting.

h. Our laboratory room has standard 120V power and is also supplied with 200V- 220V, 1.5kw, 60Hz, 3-phase (4 wirings) power. The motor for the tipping mechanism can conform to either of these power options. Other power options can be considered if necessary.

6. Controls for Tipping Mechanism and Safety Features

a. The controls for the tipping mechanism shall enable the operator to program in the speed, degree of tipping, and number of repetitions of tipping cycles.

b. The controls shall enable the tipping mechanism to have smooth (no jarring movement).

c. The controls shall have an emergency stop button easily accessible to the operator.

d. The controls shall be configured so that the tipping mechanism only operates when the chamber door is closed.

7. Fans

a. Fans for mixing the chamber air shall be installed inside the chamber following these guidelines:

i. Fans shall be rated at 30 CFM (comparable item- Dayton model 4WT40).

ii. Fans shall have a screen on them to prevent bodily injury.

iii. Fans shall be mounted on brackets that allow some adjustment of direction.

iv. Fan location

1. Fans shall be placed at all top and bottom corners of the chamber and at all mid-point locations of the lengths of the chamber (both on the top and bottom). The total number of fans is 12.

v. All fans need power cords. Fans will run at full speed, so a variable power control mechanism is not required.

vi. The chamber needs an external switch (or switches) to power the fans on/off.

vii. Because fans are relatively inexpensive and expected to experience rusting in the NaCl aerosol environment, fans do not need to be protected from rusting. Fans should be mounted in a way that they can be replaced easily.

8. Drilled Pass-Through Holes

a. There will need to be numerous holes drilled in the walls of the chamber to allow the pass through of tubing.

i. One hole in the ceiling, ~3.25 in. diameter.

ii. A maximum of four holes, ~1.25 in. diameter.

iii. A maximum of four holes, ~1 in. diameter.

iv. Exact hole locations to be determined during the design process in communication with the awardee.

9. Vent

a. A vent shall be installed on one of the chamber walls

i. the vent does not require a fan.

ii. the vent is simply an opening that can be opened and closed to allow outside air to enter the chamber.

iii. the vent opening shall have an area of 7 in2.

iv. the vent location to be determined during the design process in communication with the awardee.

10. Hooks

a. The chamber shall a system of hooks or elements to hang tubing from in the proximity of the tipping platform.

b. The hooks or hanging elements will need to be affixed to the chamber ceiling and walls in proximity of the tipping platform.

11. Electrical Outlets

a. The chamber will need 2 duplex 120V electrical receptacles mounted inside the chamber.

12. Delivery/Assembly/Set-Up/Installation

a. The awardee will deliver, assemble, set-up, and install the chamber at the NIOSH facility, Building 13, Room 210, 626 Cochran’s Mill Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15236.

b. Materials wider than 33” will not fit through the laboratory door, thus much of the assembly may need to be done onsite in Building 13, Room 210.

13. Warranty

a. A one-year warranty on parts and labor is required.

File details come from the government source that posted it.
