About this file

This is Chapter 7 of a Technical Order (TO 14S1-3-51) detailing components and inspection requirements for Aircrew Flight Equipment (AFE), specifically survival vests and parachute spacer kits.

The document establishes that minimum components listed in designated tables must be installed on all survival vests and parachute spacer kits, while all other components are optional and subject to Major Command (MAJCOM) approval in writing. The minimum component requirements include a Radio Set AN/PRQ-7A with battery (NSN 5825-01-590-7641, Part Number 4866113-101) or a Beacon Distress/Survival Kit Electronic Signaling Device (SKED) (NSN 5820-99-290-5254, Part Number 730S-01261) or a PRC-648 with battery (NSN 5826-31-018-7735, Part Number 21530912775), with a quantity of one unit required. The document specifies that units must consider size, weight, and egress factors when selecting optional components, and items prone to spillage or melting must be placed in polyethylene interlocking bags. Three types of inspections are mandated: Special Inspection (performed when conditions warrant a complete equipment review), Preflight/Screening Inspection (visual inspection of equipment received from supply for obvious defects prior to use), and Periodic Inspection (accomplished in accordance with specified maintenance schedules). AFE technicians must inspect general condition including dents, cracks, leaks, corrosion, loose or missing screws, and visible wear signs that could affect operation.

CHAPTER 7

COMPONENTS

7.1 GENERAL.

Items listed in the minimum component tables will be installed. All other components listed within Chapter 7 series tables are considered optional and may be selected regardless of end item. Units must consider factors such as size, weight, and egress when making selection of optional components. All other components must be approved by applicable Major Command (MAJCOM) in writing (i.e. organizational email/organizational distribution list).

NOTE

• Any item prone to spillage/melting will be placed in polyethylene interlocking bags or suitable substitute.

• Lead MAJCOM will ensure approved technical guidance is available to support mission requirements and vest/kit configurations not included in this publication. Designated aircraft program offices will determine baseline equipment requirements for their Mission Design Series (MDS).

• Organizations preparing for deployment or contingency operations should consult their owning MAJCOM and/or applicable Area of Responsibility representative for additional Aircrew Flight Equipment (AFE) requirements.

7.2 INSPECTION.

NOTE

Units may local purchase the highest available Sun Protection Factor (SPF) sun ointment/lipstick for use in survival kits, if the required SPF level is not available.

All components will be subject to the following type inspections.

7.2.1 Special Inspection. A special inspection will be performed on equipment in service or in storage whenever conditions warrant. The inspector or supervisor will determine the extent of the special inspection. If conditions warrant, the inspector or supervisor shall direct a complete inspection of the equipment regardless of last inspection date.

7.2.2 Preflight/Screening Inspection. All equipment received from supply will have a screening inspection prior to use/installation. The preflight/screening inspection will consist of a visual inspection of equipment for obvious defects that may cause malfunctions.

7.2.3 Periodic Inspection. Periodic inspections of components will be accomplished in accordance with Paragraph 2.6.

NOTE

If component inspection requirements are not identified, AFE technicians will inspect the general condition of the item to ensure serviceability. General condition includes, but is not limited to: dents, cracks, leaks, corrosion, loose or missing screws, and any other visible signs of wear that could adversely affect the items intended operation.
