Supply Requirement with Salient Characteristics Dual Chamber Heat Treating Furnace

Part 1.0 – General

1.1 – Description

The Mechanical Group at Hoover Dam has a need for Heat treating Metal parts.

Heat treating involves heating a material to extreme temperatures thereby achieving a desired result such as hardening or softening. This need can be met with a Heat treating furnace.

Maintenance on Industrial equipment at Hoover Dam frequently requires fabrication of bespoke repair parts to deliver Water and Electricity safely and reliably. Maximum equipment efficiency often requires custom fabricated parts to undergo variants of Heat treatment such as: Hardening, Annealing, Normalizing, and Tempering.

This machine will increase overall quality capabilities of in-house Craftsman fabricated bespoke parts.

1.2 – Measurement and Payment

A. The cost measurement for the Heat Treating Furnace includes the following:

1. A Dual Chamber Heat Treating Furnace with custom build options identified in Part 2.1 Section A

3. A Quench tank for dipping of parts.

3. Delivery to The Hoover Dam Central Warehouse.

4. Electrical schematics, Operating procedures manual, Service manual, Parts list, Safety guidelines manual, Digital controller manual, and any other instruction booklets.

B. Payment

1. Firm fixed price (or other TBD) upon successful inspection of product upon delivery.

Part 2.0 – Products

2.1 – Dual Chamber Heat Treating Furnace Salient Characteristics

A. Heat Treating Furnace must be of a Dual Chamber Design with all characteristics below met.

1) Overall machine dimensions must be ≤ 133” H x 54” W x 54” L.

2) Furnace must be equipped to operate on 480V/3-Phase/60 Hertz Electric Power.

3) Furnace must be composed of two independently operated chamber furnaces assembled vertically in one unit.

4) High Temperature Chamber - One chamber must be intended for high temperature operations ≥1400°F such as hardening and have a maximum temperature of ≥2300°F. Chamber power rating must be ≥ 30 KW. Chamber dimensions must be ≥ 24” Wide x 24” High x 24” Deep. Chamber must be accessed via a manual counterweighted vertical rising door operated by a hand crank. Chamber door must have the ability to be secured in the open position.

4-1) High temperature chamber must have a high limit temperature protection system with separate: digital controller, magnetic contactor and thermocouple for triggering automatic furnace shutdown during overtemperature conditions. One example of an acceptable controller is the Eurotherm EPC3016.

4-2) High temperature chamber heating elements must be user replaceable without compromising the insulation.

4-3) High temperature chamber must have a door safety switch to de-energize heating elements when the door is opened and re-energize when closed.

4-4) High temperature chamber must have a removable ≥ 1.50” thick hearth plate.

5) Normalizing/Annealing/Tempering Chamber - One chamber must be intended for operations such as Normalizing/Annealing/Tempering/Drawing and have a maximum temperature of ≥ 1200°F. Chamber power rating must be ≥ 15 KW. Chamber dimensions must be ≥24” Wide x 24” High x 24” Deep. Chamber must be accessed via a hinged swing door (OPENING FROM RIGHT TO LEFT).

5-1) Normalizing/Annealing/Tempering Chamber must have a switch controlled high CFM Stainless Steel Alloy fan that is belt driven by a heavy duty motor for air recirculation.

5-2) Normalizing/Annealing/Tempering chamber must have a high limit temperature protection system with separate: digital controller, magnetic contactor and thermocouple for triggering automatic furnace shutdown during overtemperature conditions. One example of an acceptable high limit digital controller product is the Eurotherm EPC3016.

5-3) Normalizing/Annealing/Tempering chamber heating elements must be user replaceable without compromising the insulation.

5-4) Normalizing/Annealing/Tempering chamber must have a door safety switch to de-energize heating elements when the door is opened and re-energize when closed.

5-5) Normalizing/Annealing/Tempering Chamber must have a ≥16 gauge stainless steel alloy liner.

6) Each chamber must have a dedicated Programmable Digital control system. One example of an acceptable high limit digital controller product is the Eurotherm EPC3004.

6-1) Each Digital controller must have capability functions:

6-1-1) Soak timer shuts off heating elements and triggers alarm after soak cycle.

6-1-2) ≥10 programs with ≥12 segments 6-1-3) ≥ 2 programmable alarms

7) Each chamber must have an Audible bell and Visual flashing strobe for event notifications.

8) An enamel painted quench tank with equivalent chamber dimensions mounted on casters must be included.

8-1) A handle and drain plug must be affixed to the quench tank.

9) All electrical components must be UL approved and rated to meet or exceed NFPA Codes 79 and 86.
