Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) Dating for Seventy-eight (78) Archaeological Site Samples, Point Reyes National Seashore

Statement of Work

1.0 Background and Objectives

In support of a project to evaluate thirteen archaeological sites situated along the North and South ocean coast of Point Reyes National Seashore, the National Park Service has a requirement for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) Radiocarbon Dating services for seventy eight (78) samples derived from the thirteen archaeological sites. This information will be integrated with other information associated with the thirteen archaeological sites to determine site structure, material contents, and age of occupation. The information from the radiocarbon dating shall be incorporated into a Final Report that describes the structure, materials contents, age of occupation, and interpretations of thirteen archaeological sites situated along the northern and southern coast of Point Reyes.

2.0 Scope

This service shall provide the Point Reyes National Seashore with information about the radiocarbon age of seventy eight (78) samples submitted for radiocarbon dating by AMS.

The samples to be submitted for radiocarbon dating will be primarily charcoal, however, some samples will be paired charcoal and marine shell samples. For each sample, the radiocarbon age and associated uncertainties shall be reported.

3.0 Tasks

AMS dating shall be used to determine the radiocarbon age of the seventy eight (78) samples submitted by Point Reyes National Seashore.

3.1 The lab conducting this service shall conduct the necessary pretreatments to remove potential contaminants from the submitted samples.

3.2 AMS Dating shall be used to determine the radiocarbon age of the seventy eight (78) samples.

3.3 A report containing the dating results and methods shall be provided to Point Reyes National Seashore in an electronic format. The report shall include the radiocarbon age and the associated uncertainties of the submitted samples.

4.0 Delivery

Upon receiving samples submitted for AMS radiocarbon dating from Point Reyes National Seashore, the lab providing this service shall submit the report containing the results to Point Reyes National Seashore within a period not to exceed 10 weeks. Results shall be submitted in an electronic format to Paul Engel Point Reyes National Seashore Archeologist (email:

Paul_Engel@nps.gov; Mailing address: 1 Bear Valley Road, Point Reyes Station CA.
