About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) amendment for Solicitation #140P6425Q0119 for Angle Iron & Rebar at ZION. The Q&A addresses three technical questions related to galvanization specifications and processes for angle iron. Key clarifications include: (1) cut ends of galvanized angle iron must be sprayed with zinc coating, and drilling holes in angles for zinc dipping is acceptable, (2) galvanizing to ASTM A123 standard (a thicker coating) is acceptable despite the original G90 grade specification, and (3) for the galvanizing process, both drilling a hole or welding a ring/stud for hanging are acceptable, with drilling a hole being the preferred method. The document provides specific guidance on meeting the technical requirements for material preparation and coating.

Angle Iron & Rebar – ZION

Questions and Answers listed below:

QUESTIONS:

Question # Question Answer/Response

1. On the 3x3x1/4 angle that is galvanized there are two options:

The first option is to galvanize 20’ lengths first and then cut them to 8’ sections. However, the cut ends would not be galvanized. Would these need to be sprayed on with a zinc coating?

The second option is to galvanize the 95 pcs 8’, but they would need to drill a couple of holes in each angle to dip them in the zinc - this would cause everything to be zinc coated. Please advise if the holes would be acceptable and meet the requirements listed in the Specifications?

Cut ends would need to be sprayed on with a zinc coating.

Holes in each angle would be acceptable and meet the requirements listed in the Specifications.

2. The specification listed is G90 grade, which is ASTM A653. We have a company that we work with that does galvanizing to ASTM A123 standard, which is a thicker coating. Would this be an acceptable specification for this solicitation?

Galvanizing to ASTM A123 would be acceptable and meet the requirements listed in the Specifications.

3. With the galvanizing process, it is required that we either drill a hole into the material, or weld on a ring or stud for hanging purposes. After galvanizing, the ring or stud is typically cut off, and the exposed area is touched up with ZRC Galvalite Galvanizing Compound (this product meets the galvanizing repair requirements of ASTM A 780). Would either of these options be acceptable for the purposes of the solicitation? If so, which would be preferred?

Both options would be acceptable and meet the requirements listed in the Specifications.

The option of drilling a hole into the material is preferred.
