About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document from a contractor site visit for KNRI–345002: VC Sanitary Sewer Plumbing and Septic System, dated June 10, 2026, and signed by Contract Officer Joseph Kirk.
The document addresses 19 clarification questions regarding project execution and requirements. Key technical clarifications include: two 1500-gallon septic tanks in series are acceptable alternatives to a single 3000-gallon tank, or the tank may be cast in place; the distance between acoustic ceiling tiles and the bottom of the top floor is 2 feet with 6-inch recessed lighting fixtures; all existing acoustic ceiling tiles must be removed and replaced as part of the contract; the contractor must work around existing infrastructure including ethernet cables, fire alarm systems, water systems, and radon mitigation systems, with the park providing cable relocation assistance where practical without disrupting operations. Pump station motors require explosion-proof certification for Class 1 Division 1 locations per specification 333213, 2.3.B.2.e, with no seismic rating requirements. The facility was built in 1995, making asbestos and lead-based paint highly unlikely. Commissioning of existing systems is not required; however, the contractor must fulfill Operations and Maintenance requirements and provide a factory representative for up to 8 hours of lift station training. Administrative clarifications include: RFI responses normally take 7 business days and submittals require answers within 15 days per specification Item 9 (9.2)(D); Procore Project Management software usage will be determined at the pre-construction meeting; a staging area is defined on plan sheet C4; no delegated design is required for the absorption field unless deviating from provided plans; the project area has been cleared by MWAC and Section 106 processes with strict adherence required to construction limits; and pricing should be submitted as a total lump sum amount in block 17 without separate price schedules for CLINs.

KNRI – 345002: VC Sanitary Sewer Plumbing and Septic System
Contractor Site Visit: Questions and Answers
# Question Response
1 Running into issues with local supplier having
3000 gal septic tank available. Are we able to use a series? Or do you have a source for that tank?
Two 1500 Gallon tanks in series would be an acceptable alternative. Or the tank can be cast in place to be one 3000 gallon tank as shown in the plans if a precast supplier cannot be found.
2 What is the height of the existing bar joist supporting the first floor?
The distance between the ACT and bottom of top floor is 2 feet. The lighting fixtures are recessed approx. 6”.
3 Majority of the rooms in the basement have acoustic ceiling tiles (ACT) that will need to be removed for the demo and install of the new sewer lines. Should the existing ACT be salvaged and reinstalled or should the ACT be demolished and new ACT be installed?
ACT will need to be removed to do the work and they should all be replaced. Would expect this to be an item that the contractor completes as part of the contract.
4 The existing sewer pipes above the ceiling in the basement have ethernet and/or other low-voltage cables intertwined with the pipes that are to be demolished. Who will be responsible for relocating these cables?
I believe there is enough slack in the cables right above and around the telephone room to tie them out of the way. The park can tie up and relocate the cables as much as possible to facilitate the work. Contractors should exercise caution while working around these existing components as there is a significant amount of existing infrastructure in the area that the contractor will need to work around, not just network cables. The park can move and secure the cables where practical without disrupting park operations. Park’s expectation is that similar to the fire alarm system, water system, and radon mitigation system, the contractor will work around these existing systems, including the network cabling, as part of the project.
5 Do any of the low-voltage cables that need to be relocated service the card access system?
Uncertain but also reference response on item 4.
6 If the card access system cabling needs to be relocated, who is authorized to perform work on this system?
Expectation is these cables will not need to be relocated, however, if necessary, park will perform this work, coordinate with park accordingly. Item can be discussed at pre-construction meeting.
7 Is there any Badging requirements for access to the work?
No – park personnel can accommodate and discuss further at the pre-construction meeting.
8 Is there any requirements for blast ratings?
If this is in reference to the pump station, the pump motors need to be explosion proof certified for class 1 division 1 locations per specification 333213, 2.3.B.2.e. No other blast rating requirements I am aware of.
9 Is there any requirements for Seismic ratings?
No seismic rating requirements I am aware of.
10 Can you clarify if there are any asbestos required to be removed?
The Visitor Center was built in 1995, the use of asbestos is highly unlikely as well as any Lead Based
Paint (LBP).
11 Are we required to commission the existing systems?
Commissioning is not included within the SOW, however, the contractor does need to fulfill O&M requirements, and an AE is expected to be onsite for multiple inspections. Per Specification 333213,3.2.A the contactor shall provide a factory representative for up to 8hrs of training on the lift station start up, operation, and maintenance.
12 Will we be able to utilize Procore Project
Management software as the primary submittal platform?
This may be an option. Will be determined during pre-construction meeting.
13 Will we be able to utilize Procore Project
Management software as the primary RFI’s and
Project Management platform?
This may be an option. Will be determined during pre-construction meeting.
14 Can you clarify the duration of time for approval of
RFI’s and Submittals from the National Park
Service?
RFI’s response is normally 7 business days.
Submittals Response will have an answer within 15 days after receipt. Per Item 9 (9.2)(D) located on page
13 of the specifications.
15 Are there any Tero Requirements and costs required to be included?
No
16 Is there a staging area defined for the contractors use?
Yes, will be defined during the pre-construction meeting. Staging area is also shown on plan sheet C4.
17 Are we required to provide a delegated design for the absorption field?
No delegated design required, if the contractor wishes to deviate from the plans provided for the absorption field then they would need to provide a stamped design for review.
18 Has a survey of any archeological items been performed? If so can you provide this report?
The project area within the limits of construction has been cleared/approved by MWAC and Section 106 processes, the contractor needs to strictly adhere to the limits of construction/disturbance. Can be discussed further at the pre-construction meeting.
19 Can you provide a price schedule sheet for Clin10 and Clin 20?
No price schedule required. Put the total lump sum amount in block 17. Amounts.
