About this file
This document contains answers to questions regarding solicitation number 140P5424Q0003 from the Department of the Interior National Park Service Southeast Region. The solicitation is for the production of a bronze replica cannon to be delivered to Fort Matanzas National Park and placed 50 yards from the visitor center, where it will be lifted onto a waiting cannon carriage. The answers clarify that vertical casting and the lost wax method are required; the cannon will not need to be placed on the fort gundeck; and delivery via vehicle to the specified outdoor location is acceptable, as a barge will not be needed for transport or lifting onto the gundeck. No further details are provided on pricing, response dates, or contract terms.

140P5424Q0003 Amendment 1 Attachment 1
Question #1: For safety of firing purposes, to make the cannon stronger, are you requiring vertical casting as has been done historically? This is not a problem, but we just wanted to verify as we did not see this in the specifications.
Answer: We are requiring vertical casting of the cannon. Cannon tube is to be cast solid and bored.
Requirements for the manufacture of the gun can be found in Attachment B: NPS RM6 Artillery Specifications.
Question #2: Historically, in order to create a solid piece with raised decorations and intricate details, to the standards of the images you have attached, would involve lost wax / investment casting. Is this your required method of creation? Because this level of detail and decoration is not achievable with sand casting.
Answer: We are requesting the lost wax method.
Question #3: Are we expected to take down the gun that is being taken out of commission from the gun deck?
Answer: NO, you will not be taking down the gun that is being removed from service. The bronze cannon will be delivered to Fort Matanzas and will not need to be lifted onto the fort gundeck. It will need to be moved from the delivery vehicle to a resting place located 50 yards away at our park Visitor Center. Where it will need to be lifted onto a waiting cannon carriage. This distance is over mostly level ground on concrete sidewalks 4 feet wide.
Question #4: How far is the distance to the gun deck from an area in the water where there is a 3 foot depth for a barge with crane to approach?
Answer: N/A.
Question #5: Can we drive a vehicle (lifting crane or similar) onto the land portion of the property adjacent to the gun deck if we can bring that vehicle to the island by barge.
Answer: N/A.
Question #6: Have you had experience other than using a barge with crane to move a cannon on/off the gun deck? If so, can you tell us what worked for you.
Answer: N/A.
