1-2 BACKGROUND
A. Mabry Mill is the most popular single visitor site on the Blue Ridge Parkway, providing a powerful interpretive message to upwards of 2 million travelers annually.
The picturesque Mabry Mill and pond scene is the single most photographed attraction on the Parkway, and this Mabry Mill panorama is featured on calendars and post cards worldwide. Ed Mabry acquired his 90 acre farm in 1898 and built his blacksmith shop shortly thereafter. The mill was built in three stages between 1903 and 1914. A gristmill was in operation by 1905, a sawmill was added after 1910, and a woodworking shop in 1914. The machinery in all three operations was powered by the waterwheel, which in turn drew its force from the water delivered by an ingenious set of flumes and waterways constructed by Mabry to direct every drop of available water toward the mill. Using a wagon and tools he had entirely made by hand, Ed Mabry in 1914 cut logs off the adjacent slopes, hauled them to his sawmill and woodworking shop to shape and finish boards for a new frame home he had designed himself. The Mill complex buildings are historic structures and are identified in the List of Classified Structures. Preservation of the flume will provide for the continued use, interpretation and enjoyment for park visitors.
