140P4520Q0052: CONSERVE WALL TREATMENTS – THOMAS EDISON NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK, WEST ORANGE, NJ – QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Question 1: Is the ceiling excluded from the scope of the contract?

Answer 1: Yes

Question 2: What is the ceiling height, i.e. to access the cornice?

Answer 2: The cornice is approximately at 12 feet height from ground level.

Question 3: Are the interior surfaces of the various built-ins included in the Contract?

Answer 3: No

Question 4: There are areas of cornice which appear to be overpainted. Is a substantial repainting or a toning/antiquing treatment anticipated for the cornice?

Answer 4: A substantial overpainting is not anticipated. The NPS advocates the least invasive method to accomplish this work. The overall goal is to blend in areas of obvious disrepair and discoloration to improve the overall appearance of the cornice without overpainting areas that have historic finishes. Blended areas must match in finish to other cornice areas in all aspects, which includes both the color, tone, and the “antiquing treatment”.

Question 5. Does the room allow for adequate ventilation, i.e are windows operable, and will that make this project season-dependent?

Answer 5: Not all windows are operable at Glenmont. There is a door in an adjacent hallway that can be opened. The project is not season-dependent but PPE may be required. Please see Section 7.0, the Safety and Security section of the statement of work, for further details.

Question 6: Can you confirm that the furnishings, decorative objects, hanging artwork and furniture will be moved out of the room by NPS staff?

Answer 6: Mostly yes, with the exception of the corner cabinet, which is included in the project work, and the interior log bin in the fireplace. The clock on the mantel and the main dining room table will also not be removed and will be protected in place. The rug underneath the table will also remain in the room. It is a reproduction but must still be protected in place (sufficiently covered) to avoid any damage during the project. Please note that leaves will be removed and the dining table will be reduced in size.
