Tree Removal, Pruning, and Wildfire Risk Reduction at Minute Man National Historical Park Amendment 0001
DESCRIPTION OF AMENDMENT/MODIFICATION
The following are a list of questions received for the Solicitation Number 140P4325Q0082, Tree Removal, Pruning, and Wildfire Risk Reduction at Minute Man National Historical Park.
1) The contract states, “Concord/Manuel Drive Area: Mechanically mulch standing and collapsed trees and tree sections.” The Attachment A table states, “Remove and/or mulch 75 percent of standing and fallen ash trees, including where can fall on power lines, buildings or trail. Minimize ground disturbance.” Please provide more details on the locations of the trees.
Answer: For the Manuel Drive area, focus on trees that are a wildfire risk. Prune deadwood (4 inch or greater) from trees west of Manuel Drive that are adjacent to utility lines between 65 and 95 Manuel Drive, two park-owned residences. These trees are of mixed species. Also within the three-acre polygon, clear standing and collapsed trees and tree sections along an access lane to the Battle Road Trail. The lane will improve access to a large stand of dead ash along the nearby Battle Road Trail for future treatment. This area is currently inaccessible. The route of the ten-foot wide access lane will be marked with flagging.
2) The contract states, “Lincoln/Hartwell Tavern and Shelter Area: Mechanically mulch standing and collapsed trees and tree sections, including those damaged by wisteria vines (pictures included).” The Attachment A table for Hartwell Tavern Area states, “Remove and/or mulch 75 percent of standing and fallen trees. Minimize ground disturbance.” The Attachment A table for Sam Hartwell Shelter Area states, “Mulch 75 percent of wisteria vine and constricted dead trees. Leave native live standing trees.
Minimize ground disturbance.” Please provide more details on the locations of the trees and how to address the wisteria vines.
Answer: For the Samuel Hartwell Tavern Area, focus on trees that could collapse on the structure or trails. The focus area is a 200-by-200 foot polygon directly east of the shelter. Within this area, live vines growing in live trees will be cut at ground level and the lower 8 to 10 feet of the vine will be cut off of the tree. The remaining vine will remain in the live trees. If the tree is dead, the vines will be severed at ground level and the entire tree will be felled. The tree trunk may remain in place if it can be laid to be in contact with the ground. Minimize ground disturbance due to archeological sensitivity of the area.
For the Hartwell Tavern – Smith Trail, the three-acre parcel includes a large oak with a recently collapsed branch that is obstructing field access. The parcel also includes a polygon described as follows: From abandoned vehicle in woods along Smith Path eastward to the meeting corner of two stone walls at Hartwell Orchard.
Within this Smith Path segment, address all dead standing and collapsed trees within 30 feet of the Smith Path. Fell so in contact with ground or cast and spread.
Piles not allowed. When laying tree sections on the ground, ensure that the Smith Path access is 7 to 8 feet in width.

Tree Removal, Pruning, and Wildfire Risk Reduction at Minute Man National Historical Park Amendment 0001
3) The contract states, “Lexington/Fiske Hill Area: Mechanically mulch standing and collapsed trees and tree sections adjacent to former burned/arson area.” Attachment A table states, “Remove and/or mulch 75 percent of standing and fallen trees. Minimize ground disturbance.” Please provide more detail on which trees remain.
Answer: On Fiske Hill, within the 3-acre work area, several trees are not yet killed by vines. These should remain. Examples include apple, crabapple, and cherry trees. The focus is on the removal of piles of brush covered in vines and trees killed by vines, hence any trees that can be left to provide shade should be retained. Note there are less than 25% of the native trees that are still alive.
