SECTION C – DESCRIPTION/SPECIFICATION/STATEMENT OF WORK
C.0 BACKGROUND
C.0.1 NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
The National Park Service (NPS) is a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) that has been entrusted with the care of our national parks since 1916. The NPS preserves unimpaired natural and cultural resources, and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The NPS cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.
The NPS - National Capital Area (NCA) supports natural wonders to man-made marvels in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. The NCA parks include: Antietam National Battlefield, Catoctin Mountain Park, Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, George Washington Memorial Parkway, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Manassas National Battlefield Park, Monocacy National Battlefield, National Capital Parks - East, National Mall and Memorial Parks, Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, President’s Park, Prince William Forest Park, Rock Creek Park, and Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.
The National Park Service (NPS) owns and operates the Great Falls Tavern in Potomac, MD, along with ancillary structures on site, including the Pump House, east of the Tavern. The Tavern was built in 1828 as a part of the initial construction of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, as one of many typical lock keeper’s houses located along the canal. As construction ended in 1830, however, the Canal Company recognized that the scenic grandeur of Great Falls would draw tourists and decided to build an addition onto the lock keeper’s house to create a hotel and tavern, which were completed in 1831. The building continued to operate as a house of hospitality, off and on, until 1938, when the NPS acquired it and now uses it as a museum and Visitor Center for the area. The adjacent Pump House was built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps to house equipment to pump water for the Great Falls area. The existing wood shingle roofs on these buildings were installed around 2010.
C.1 PURPOSE
The DOI – NPS - NCA – has a requirement to replace the roofs on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park Great Falls Tavern and Pump House.
Work will include removing the wood shingle roofs from both structures, replacing rotted sheathing and trim and reinstalling new cedar shingle roofs on both buildings.
