(CO).

a. Include in your schedule any material lead times especially for joint filler mentioned in “C4 Work” for Expansion Joint Material, and in Section 02776, Part 2, “Expansion Joint Filler” that may very likely be a special-order item because it is thinner than the commonly-used thickness.

3. For C5, furnish labor, transportation, equipment, supplies and materials to construct an ADA/ABA-compliant, integrally-colored, welded wire-reinforced concrete pathway in accordance with the requirements of the specifications under this Contract to the satisfaction of the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) or Project Inspector (PI), namely, COR/PI who are delegated to oversee the Contract by the Contracting Officer

(CO).

a. Include in your schedule any material lead times especially for joint filler mentioned in “C5 Work” for Expansion Joint Material, and in Section 02776, Part 2, “Expansion Joint Filler” that may very likely be a special-order item because it is thinner than the commonly-used thickness.

B. For “C2 Work” Outline:

1. Concrete Pathway (Type IA) – Construct an ADA/ABA-Accessible 6-foot-wide pathway of all of 3000 psi concrete for Parking Pad Path 1 (to Parking Pad 1).

a. For path, layout, and construct 6-foot-wide pathway from a carefully trenched graded surface within the defined area of work approximately as shown in the specifications to have a finished concrete surface flush with the lightly-graded ground surface, and compact surface. Use acceptable backfill material, and compact as required. Refer to Specifications Section 2300.

b. Not Used.

c. New construction in general shall match the existing elevation between new and old concrete finished surfaces and within tolerances. That is, the maximum

Painted Rocks Campground

Summary 01100-2

Vertical Change in Level for concrete surfaces is ¼-Inch (one-quarter inch) between existing “and/or” new construction. Furthermore, with approval of the COR/PI, the Contractor may also opt for a variation, namely, a combination of Vertical change in Level and a Beveled Change in Elevation which is described as an additional maximum ¼-inch (one-quarter inch) change in elevation but with bevel at 2 horizontal to 1 vertical.

d. As applicable, keep running slopes as constant as possible which shall not exceed the following:

1. 5 percent (1:20) for any distance.

2. 8.33 percent (1:12) for a maximum of 50 feet but requires prior field approval by COR/PI.

3. 10 percent (1:10) for a maximum of 30 feet but requires prior field approval by COR/.PI.

4. For stretches of pathways that exceed the aforementioned upper travel distance limits, square landings of at least 6 feet square are required of minimum cross-slope for drainage in order not to exceed those maximum travel distances.

e. The finished surface elevations adjoining new work with new work and existing work shall match.

f. Make the cross-slope constant at but not exceeding 2.08 percent (1:48). If a transition should become necessary as field approved by COR/PI, make a smooth cross-slope transition within 6 feet running distance.

g. Make all pathway surfaces have a skid-resistant broom finish. Refer to the Specifications 02776, Subsection 3.4 for more information.

h. Put control joints (cj) with a guideboard and groover to one-third depth of pathway perpendicular to the running direction in accordance with the Specifications, and construction joints shall be equidistant at 6-foot intervals.

Furthermore, the COR/PI will review for approval field proposals with respect to esthetics to resolve any “odd intervals” that can occur at the end of pathways and will accept changing some of the equidistant intervals or accepting the ending interval. Acceptable equidistant intervals range from 3 feet to 6 feet.

i. Put an expansion joint (ej) between new pathways and existing structures, between new pathways and new slabs and in cross direction of pathways every 18 running feet. That is, a full 18 running feet shall have 2 control joints between two expansion joints. The aforementioned “odd interval” applies.

2. Van/Automobile-Accessible Parking Pad 1 (Type II) – Construction of two vehicle parking pad at Parking Pad 1.

a. Construct a wire reinforced 3000 psi concrete parking pad of dimensions 30-feet wide by 21-feet long by 6-inches thick for the interior with thickened edges all around the new slab to the dimensions also shown in the specifications drawings that shall have a finished concrete surface flush with the lightly-graded ground surface.

b. In general, the new construction shall match the existing elevation between new and old concrete finished surfaces within tolerances. That is, the maximum Vertical Change in Level is ¼-Inch (0.25 inch) between existing and new construction. Furthermore, with approval of the COR/PI, the Contractor may also opt for Beveled Change in Elevation which is described as the maximum Vertical Change in Level of ¼-inch (one-quarter inch) plus on top a ¼-inch (one-quarter inch) change in elevation with bevel at 2 horizontal to 1 vertical.

c. Make the slab have a skid-resistant broom finish. Refer to Specifications 02776, Subsection 3.4 for more information.

SECTION 02300 – EARTHWORK, EXCAVATION & FILL FOR STRUCTURES

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Description of Work: Excavation is primarily for placement of concrete forms “and/or” concrete placements, backfill of materials wherever necessary, and execution of other earthwork activities as necessary.

1.2 REFERENCE DRAWINGS

A. Refer to the attached Specifications Drawings.

1.3 DEFINITIONS & LIMITATIONS

A. ABC is an acronym for aggregate base course and is composed of natural or crushed, angular rock and some fines. It is of varying sizes that meet the gradation standards in this Section and is used as a base course in roadways, pathways, and concrete pads as well as for foundations in general. It is also used as a backfill material for general fill situations, underground pipelines, and other underground utilities.

B. Backfill is concrete, controlled low-strength concrete or aggregate base course (ABC).

Native material from excavation is generally considered an unclassified excavation that is subject to the COR/PI’s discretion for use. It furthermore must be free of loose materials like vegetation and deleterious materials. Refer to unclassified excavation.

C. Unclassified Excavation is earthwork on native material of unknown soil classification under a classification system that is recognized, say, in Geotechnical Engineering. The materials may include rock, soil materials, and obstructions.

D. Earthfill is earthwork on native or local soil without vegetation and other deleterious material resulting from excavation for concrete work or nearby on site. Otherwise, any earthfill source shall require the approval of the COR/PI before use.

E. Excavation is the removal of material encountered on surface and are:

1. To elevations regardless of the character of grade or subgrade conditions encountered.

2. To the extent necessary to complete the Work in accordance with the specifications.

F. Unauthorized Excavation is also known as over excavation, is excavation below surface or beyond lines and dimensions contrary to the specifications and, as well as remedial work, shall be borne by the Contractor.

G. Over Excavation is earthwork that is, in the opinion of the COR/PI, excavation beyond the depth necessary for pathways, parking pads and slabs in general or outside the pathways, parking pads and slabs in general. Furthermore, over excavation inadvertently from removal

02300-2 of, say, cobbles (generally from 75 mm to 300 mm) “and/or” boulders (generally from 300 mm and up) leaving large holes requires an approved backfill material defined above if structural concrete is not used.

H. Fill is earthwork and a general term for soil to fill places where earth is required.

I. Grading is earthwork to bring ground to another grade. Refer to grade.

J. Grade (Gradient) is any slope of ground that can be original, constructed or excavated whether in progress or final.

K. Subgrade refers to grade below concrete work and is defined as a finished surfaced of native soil free of loose materials like vegetation and deleterious materials.

L. Base refers to grade below concrete work and is defined as a finished surfaced of native soil free of loose materials without vegetation and deleterious materials.

M. Structures are slabs, walls, fences, or other man-made stationary features constructed above or below the grade.

N. Utilities are on-site underground pipes, conduits, ducts, and cables, as well as underground services within structures whether known or unknown to exist.

O. Original Ground (O.G.) is the ground surface as encountered, and the acronym is “O.G.” used throughout the specifications.

1.4 PROJECT CONDITIONS
