Questions Addressed 140L6221R0034 Geoarchaeological Assessment Welch Ranch
1. Would the BLM be willing to provide a backhoe, backhoe operator, and backhoe archaeological monitor for 1.5 days at no cost to the project?
a. No, BLM will not be providing a backhoe or backhoe operator this will be the responsibility of the contractor. Please see the Government Supplied Property. The BLM will provide an archeological monitor during backhoe trenching, but the contractor should be prepared to document and evaluate any cultural resources uncovered. Any artifacts uncovered should be curated at the University of Wyoming Archaeological Repository.
2. If not, would it be acceptable to substitute soil pit(s) and/or river cutbank cleaning for any backhoe trenching? This of course would increase the hand labor costs but allow omitting the backhoe costs. Does the BLM archaeologist believe there will be some cutbanks suitable for shovel-cleaning to get date samples ~1 meter below ground surface?
a. There are cutbanks suitable for shovel cleaning and soil pits are acceptable. However, some areas may need a backhoe, so that should be considered as well.
