About this file
This is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) document for federal contract 140L5726Q0018 addressing clarifications on fence installation specifications and materials.
The Q&A addresses six key inquiries regarding fence construction components and installation methods. For drill pipe posts, bells and collars do not require removal and can remain attached. The Keyhole Brace bracket system is acceptable for this project, as are other similar H-Brace bracket styles provided they can create sturdy braces without welding. For 2-7/8 inch pipe posts, threads and collars may remain on 10-foot posts, though collars should ideally be cut from 8-foot posts. Regarding the four steel gates required, hinges should utilize bolts and nuts rather than lag-style J bolts to accommodate installation on both pipe and wood posts with adjustment capability. Gate closers should be specifically designed for pipe posts and do not require bottom metal or cable loops, as wire loops will be used instead. The document also includes supplementary marketing material for the Keyhole Brace System, highlighting its weld-free design, labor efficiency benefits, reduced installation time (10-15 minutes versus one hour per corner for traditional methods), and 50% labor cost savings compared to traditional welded H-brace installations.

Q&A’s
Q1. As far as the drill pipe goes, do the bells and collar ends of the pipe need to be cut off?
or can they be left on (they will not interfere with installation of the brace brackets)
A1. The bells and collars do not need to be cut off the posts.
Q2. Is the Keyhole Brace bracket system an acceptable system? We have installed them on BLM fences before so I would think they would be accepted.
A2. Yes, the Keyhole Brace bracket system would be an acceptable system.
Q3. For the 2-7/8 pipe posts should the pipe threads and collars be cut off for straight pipe or if the posts are being driven in, do you want them left on?
A3. The threads and collars can be left on the 10-foot posts. Ideally, the collars would be cut off the 8-foot posts.
Q4. On the H brace bracket kits, are those specific galvanized brackets what you want or are other similar styles acceptable?
A4. Other similar H-Brace brackets will work. They just need to be able to make a sturdy H Brace without welding.
Q5. For the 4 steel gates, do you have a specific hinge requirement? Your figure 3 image shows a lag style J bolt, when if they are being installed through pipe bracing you will want threaded ends with nuts for adjustment.
A5. Bolts and nut type hinges would be ideal. These gates may be used on wood or steel posts, depending where the need for a replacement gate arises.
Q6. Likewise for the gate closures, your figure 4 images shows mounting to a wood post not a pipe post, extra drilling or welding would be likely necessary. I should have an image attached of a gate closure for pipe posts.
With the gate closures, do you require a bottom metal or cable loop as well or will you be using wire loops for the bottoms of the gate closure side.
A6. Gate closers for pipe posts would be ideal. They do not need the bottom metal or cable loops. We will use wire loops.
