SPECIFICATIONS FOR GREAT BASIN CACHE

MRE REPLACEMENT MEALS

I. BACKGROUND

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) in Boise, Idaho has a requirement for contractor supplied food boxes to replace MRE's in all cache vans. A recent report has raised concern about potential contaminants in some military Meals, Ready-to-Eat (MREs). This report is not yet verified, and steps are being taken to determine the safety of MREs currently available to support wildland fire operations. Firefighter health and safety is our top priority, and the Department of the Interior will support shelf-stable food alternatives to MREs, as a cautionary interim measure, to be purchased by the interagency cache system under our existing procurement policy to ensure MRE alternatives for distribution during operations.

II. SCOPE

A one-time purchase of freeze-dried food boxes equivalent in calories, shelf stability, and caloric proprieties to replace the pallet of MRE's normally issued to fires during initial attack to provide food for fire fighters until food services can be arranged.

III. TASK

Purchase 1-year supply units of freeze-dried food boxes equivalent to calories, shelf stability, and caloric properties to MRE’s. Food boxes needed to replace 11 pallets of MRE's required for 11 separate cache vans located in 11 different locations requiring this purchase to be pre-packaged in 1 month supply boxes with intermixed meal choices (breakfast and lunch/dinner entrees) to ensure Government does not have to repackage shipment after delivery.
