About this file

This is a Statement of Work for the manufacture and delivery of stock water troughs. The contractor must furnish labor, materials, and equipment to fabricate troughs according to specifications and referenced drawings. Troughs must be constructed from 14-gauge steel sheet and meet requirements of ASTM A6/A6M-87, ASTM A36/A36M-87, and ASTM A569/A56. All troughs must be watertight, with couplings having threads free of damage, and warping not exceeding ½ inch between any diagonal measurement. The troughs and braces shall be either painted or galvanized per the designated pay item. If hot-dipped galvanized after fabrication, coating must meet ASTM A123-83, with welded or damaged areas touched up using zinc-rich paint per Federal Specification TT-P-641G. Fasteners must be cadmium-plated or galvanized 5/16 x 1 inch hex head bolts with washers and nuts. Additional components include piping meeting ASTM A120-84 requirements, 14-gauge steel lids, and ¾-inch number 9 expanded metal galvanized bird ladders.

Fabrication requirements specify continuous welds ground smooth, bent metal fitted to adjoining pieces with minimal gaps, and one-piece fabricated ends. All welds must be full and watertight, meeting AWS D9.1-84 standards. Troughs should be fabricated from the largest practical steel sheets to minimize welded seams, with seams set flush for smooth butt corner joints. When not using galvanized sheet stock, troughs and appurtenances must be hot-dipped galvanized per ASTM A123-84 with coupling threads cleaned of excess galvanizing. Stacking requires a minimum of two 2" x 2" wood shims placed across the inside bottom of each trough to prevent wedging. Shop or field inspection will be conducted, with defective welds removed and rewelded, potentially requiring certified laboratory testing. All troughs must pass hydrostatic testing by filling to maximum water level. Payment is made per actual number of fabricated and accepted troughs.

PART 1: GENERAL

1.01 WORK INCLUDED:

A. Description of Work: Furnish labor, materials, and equipment to manufacture and deliver those items indicated on the bid schedule. Items shall be constructed in accordance with these specifications and as shown in the drawings.

B. Quality assurance:

1. The troughs shall be watertight.

2. Couplings shall have threads free of damage.

3. Any trough warped more than ½ - inch between any diagonal measurement will be rejected.

1.03 SUBMITTALS:

A. Manufacturer’s Literature: Submit three copies of the Manufacturer’s Literature for each Coating used.

PART 2: PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS:

A. Troughs: Trough material shall be 14-Gauge Steel Sheet. Trough and appurtenances shall meet the requirements of ASTM A6/A6M-87, ASTM A36/A36M-87, and ASTM

A569/A56. Galvanized steel sheet, 14-gauge shall be used when not using the hot-dip method of fabrication.

B. Coatings: Troughs, and braces shall be painted or galvanized as per pay item of PART

4:.

1. Zinc (Hot-Dipped Galvanized) Coating after fabrication: Troughs galvanized after fabrication shall have galvanized trough braces. Trough and appurtenances shall meet requirements of ASTM A123-83. Welded or damaged galvanized coating shall be painted with a zinc-rich paint meeting the requirements of F.S. TT-P641G.

C. Trough Brace: Trough brace shall meet the requirements of ASTM A6/6M-87 and

ASTM A36M-87.

D. Fasteners: Bolts, washers, and nuts shall be cadmium-plated or galvanized. Bolts, washers, and nuts shall be 5/16 x 1 inch with hex head.

E. Piping: Piping shall meet the requirements of ASTM A120-84.

F. LID: LID shall be 14-Gauge Steel Sheet. Trough and appurtenances shall meet the requirements of ASTM A6/A6M-87, ASTM A36/A36M-87, and ASTM A569/A56.

Galvanized steel sheet, 14-gauge shall be used when not using the hot-dip method of fabrication.

G. Bird Ladder: ¾” number 9 expanded metal galvanized

2.02 FABRICATION

A. Edges: Edges shall be continuous around corners with welds ground smooth.

B. Bends: Metal shown bent (broke) shall be shaped so as to fit adjoining piece with a minimum gap.

C. Ends: Fabricate ends out of one piece.

D. Welds: Trough and pipe-couplings shall be welded with full welds and be water tight.

Welds shall meet the requirements of AWS D9.1-84.

E. Seams: Fabricate troughs out of steel sheets as large as practical to reduce welded seams to a minimum. Set seams flush with adjoining piece to provide smooth butt corner joints.

F. Galvanizing: Troughs and appurtenances shall be hot-dipped galvanized after fabrication in accordance with ASTM A123-84. Threads on couplings shall be cleaned of excess galvanizing to facilitate unobstructed connection of other fittings. If the trough is manufactured from galvanized steel sheet, this fabrication is not necessary.

G. Stacking: A minimum of Two 2" X 2" wood shims shall be placed across the inside bottom of troughs before stacking to prevent troughs from wedging tightly together and hindering separation.

PART 3: EXECUTION

3.01 INSPECTION:

A. Shop or field inspection will be conducted. If welds are found to be defective, they shall be removed by chipping with a round nosed tool, or by arc or oxygen gouging, and then rewelding. Sandblasting, welding, and painting may require testing by a certified laboratory.

3.02 TESTING:

B. The Stock Water Troughs shall be hydro-statically tested by filling the troughs with water to the maximum water level.

PART 4: MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

4.01 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT:

A. Units: The quantity of Stock Watering Troughs measured and paid for will be the actual number fabricated and accepted.
