Standard Operating Procedures and Mitigation Measures for Applying Herbicides

Prepare an operational and spill contingency plan in advance of treatment. (SOP)

Conduct a pretreatment survey before applying herbicides. (SOP)

Avoid spraying during periods of adverse weather conditions (snow or rain imminent, fog or air turbulence). (SOP)

Take precaution to minimize drift by not applying herbicides when wind exceeds >6 mph, or a serious rainfall event is imminent. (SOP)

Use drift control agents and low volatile formulations. (SOP)

Conduct mixing and loading operations in an area where an accidental spill would not contaminate an aquatic body. (SOP)

Do not rinse spray tanks in or near water bodies. (SOP)

Use appropriate herbicide‐free buffer zones as provided in the Pesticide Use Proposal.

All loading or material transfer sites shall be at least 100 feet away from any perennial or intermittent stream or other water sources. (SOP)

Establish appropriate buffer zones specific for Federally listed or sensitive species. (MM)

Site specific analysis for roadside treatments should specifically consider that drainage ditches and structures may lead to streams with sensitive status species and treatments should be selected accordingly. (MM)

Impacts to wildlife from herbicide applications can be reduced by treating habitat during times when the animals are not present or are not breeding, migrating, or confined to localized areas (such as crucial winter range). (MM)
