About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding a federal contract opportunity for hoof trimming services at a Bureau of Land Management facility. The contract will require trimming approximately 50-60 horses per day according to a schedule set in advance by hoof length. All trimmers must be named in the proposal along with their experience. While other work will not be done on trim days, the contractor must be prepared to trim 50-60 head per day within a 10-hour period using one squeeze chute supplied by BLM. Wranglers will be provided to operate the chute and restrain the animals. Proposals can include different pricing thresholds to account for potential delays, and travel expenses will be covered in cases of BLM equipment issues.

Question: Will the hoof trimming services be performed on demand, or according to a schedule set in advance? Any idea how many head of horses will need to be trimmed each time? Thank you.
Answer: All- a schedule will be set in advance depending on the length of the animals hooves at the facility. Average number of horses trimmed/day is 50-60 head
Question: Do all trimmers need to be named in the proposal?
(Given all have vast experience trimming barefoot and corrective shoeing/trimming.)
Answer: Yes, any key personnel would need to be named with their listed experience (resume, etc).
Question: I have concerns with 60 head a day. This is a horse every 10 minutes for a 10 hour day. From what I understand this includes vet work at the same time as the trimming. Has this been completed successfully by other contractors in the past?
Answer: No other work would be done to the animals on the trim days (only trimming). The trim contracts at the Fallon, NV and Bruneau, ID contract facilities which both have trimming contracts, the averages are 50-60 hd/day.
Question: Can the proposal have a set cost at different thresholds? For example X dollars for 1-30 head and another dollar amount for 30 head and over? This would allow for some safeguards in the event the facility had equipment trouble or extended time of a horse in the squeeze for veterinary care.
Answer: Yes, only in case of unexpected chute or BLM equipment breakdown. This would allow for the contractor to cover travel expense.
Question: Lastly, will this all be done in one or multiple chutes? I ask because that would make a difference in manpower and equipment needed to most effectively get the job done. For example, if we have one squeeze we would have 3 trimmers at all times - 2 trimming and 1 prepping equipment. Where if we’re running 2 squeezes we would need 5-6 trimmers to maintain a steady pace.
Answer: There is only one chute. Only trimming will done to the horses when the trim contractor is on site. BLM will supply wranglers to operate the chute, load and restrain animals. Trim contractor will only be responsible to trim each animals and provide the necessary equipment for humane proper trimming methods.
