About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for bulk mineralogy and detailed clay analysis of rock samples via X-ray diffraction.
The work supports the AGGER and Thermal Indices projects, which investigate pore network development in the Lower Huron Member of the Ohio Shale across the Appalachian Basin. The analysis aims to characterize mineralogical transformations and organic matter evolution across varying thermal maturity levels, with emphasis on clay minerals' role in determining porosity and pore size distribution. The vendor must perform two primary services: (1) quantitative mineralogical analysis by X-ray diffraction for bulk crystalline phases and amorphous content on 58 samples, and (2) quantitative mineralogical analysis by X-ray diffraction for clay fraction speciation on 58 samples. Both services include sample preparation, XRD measurement, data interpretation, and reporting. Deliverables must include documentation of all procedures and data in Excel spreadsheet format, with completion required no later than two months after sample receipt. Performance will occur at the vendor's laboratory, and the government will furnish the rock samples. The period of performance is two months from the date of award. The government technical contact is listed as "TBA."

STATEMENT OF WORK
Bulk Mineralogy and Detailed Clay Analysis via X-ray Diffraction Analysis
I - General Information:
A - Introduction: In cooperation with the AGGER project, a task in the Thermal Indices project is investigating the pore network development of the Lower Huron Member of the Ohio Shale, a naturally occurring sequence of black shale crossing the petroleum system thermal boundaries of immature, oil-producing, and gas producing in the Appalachian Basin. The thermal sequence in the Ohio Shale is used to study mineralogical transformations and molecular evolution in organic matter as the samples transition to progressively higher maturity. A fundamental characteristic of these rocks are the pore networks that are dominated by nanometer size pores and nano-darcy permeability. Organic matter and clay minerals are the two main hosts of pores in shale, and the clay types can play an important role in determining total porosity and pore size distribution. This task aims to assess the pores in this context through detailed rock characterization, including detailed clay analysis, and advanced porosity analysis.
The level of analytical detail regarding clay speciation required by this study is rarely generated by commercial labs.
B - Background: The Ohio Shale sample sequence has been extensively characterized in terms of its mineralogy, organic matter and thermal maturity. These findings have been published in multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts and compared and contrasted with artificial thermal sequences created from similar shale samples using laboratory pyrolysis methods. Porosity and clay mineral characterization will add critical information that can be applied to understand petroleum migration, hydrocarbon storage potential, extraction potential, and evolution of these properties during thermal advance, and potential issues associated with certain clay minerals that could arise during drilling and completions work.
C - Definitions/Applicable Documents: None
D - Scope: The proposed work includes paired bulk mineralogy and detailed clay analysis by way of X-ray diffraction analysis. The level of detail provided by Qmineral will allow the relationship between clay mineral species and porosity to be fully assessed.
