About this file
This document is a Performance-Based Work Statement for cosmogenic radionuclide analyses services, specifically for 10Be (Beryllium) analyses using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has a requirement for these services over a 5-year period, with an estimated 40 samples to be analyzed. The contractor will be responsible for sample pretreatment and subcontracting the AMS dating. The contractor must deliver the results in a spreadsheet format, including sample weight, standard information, 10Be/Be ratios, and laboratory errors, within one year of sample submission.
The related federal contract opportunity is a Special Notice for the intended award of a purchase order to Desert Research Institute (DRI) for these 10Be cosmogenic radionuclide analyses services using AMS. The work is a continuation of ongoing research with DRI, and they are the only laboratory capable of processing the required sample types with the necessary custom procedures. This is a sole-source procurement under simplified acquisition procedures, but other responsible parties may submit a quote by the May 24, 2024 deadline, which the Government will consider.

PERFORMANCE-BASED WORK STATEMENT
I. GENERAL INFORMATION
| A. | Introduction |
| The USGS ESC has a requirement for cosmogenic radionuclide analyses services. |
| B. | Scope. |
| The laboratory is to perform the pretreatment and will subcontract the AMS dating. The lab determines the content of a specific isotope in a geologic sample. The most common isotopes targeted are 10Be (Beryllium). This proposed contract is for 5 years. |
II. WORK REQUIREMENTS
A. Technical Requirements.
1. Approximately 40 samples will be delivered to the laboratory.
2. The samples will be crushed and ground, quartz will be separated and purified, samples will be chemically prepared, and the resulting sample will be analyzed using AMS. The results will be provided to us in a simple spreadsheet, sent via email, and will include: Sample weight, information about standards used, 10Be/Be ratios, and laboratory errors.
3. Receipt of the above information will be the criteria for acceptance of the age-determination service.
B. Deliverables.
| 1. | Spreadsheet as described above. |
| 2. | Delivery within one year of submission of samples. |
III. SUPPORTING INFORMATION
A. Period of Performance: One year from the Date of Award and four Option years subject to availability of funding and continuing needs.
B. Place of Performance: Contractor’s facility.
C. Government Furnished Property (GFP): None.
D. Special Considerations: None.
