Questions and Answers
Q1: Is a Geotechnical Soils Report available for bidding purposes?
A1: Attached is the last Geotechnical Engineering Report that was conducted at the ID-WSC prior to the new building 4 construction
Q2: What is the extent of landscaping repairs? Without a drawing to outline placement of the pipe line, we cannot determine quantities of what will need to be repaired landscape-wise.
A2: Since we do not know the size or quantity of the equipment the awarded contractor will bring, we cannot predict the amount of landscape damage that will occur during the project. The area to be horizontally drilled, in the central drain basin of the rear parking lot (see pictures 1 & 2). It is all rock, less a few small landscaping trees that were placed there last year (see picture 3 & 4). They can simply dig them up by hand, and temporarily place in a planter onsite until the project is complete. Any rock disturbed by the construction, can be leveled back out when drilling is completed. If by chance they tear the weed block, hit an unforeseen sprinkler line or wire, they simply fix it as they go.
Q3: Please confirm where the temporary fencing line should be placed. This will control who enters the site, provide traffic control, and protect completed work/materials/equipment.
A3: As far as the fence line, we can close the road that runs adjacent to the rear parking lot, and the first two parking stalls near the drill site, for them to work and store equipment.
Q4: Can I hire a sub-contractor
A4: Subcontractors are at the discretion of the prime contractor. If awarded USGS will have a contractor with the prime and not the subcontractor.
Q5: Does my sub have to be already registered in SAMs?
A5: Please see above. If awarded USGS will have a contractor with the prime and not the subcontractor.
Q6: Is trenching an option as opposed to the horizontal drilling?
A6: -Trenching is not a cost effective solution for us as it breaks up the new parking lot and sidewalks to complete; not to mention significantly increasing construction costs. That’s why we opted for horizontal drilling with a 4 inch pipe.
Q7: What type of catche basin is being requesting?
A7: Don’t quite understand the question. We are diverting the water that is retained in the central drain basin, and moving it to a much larger existing catch basin. We are not requesting a new catch basin.
Q8: What is the volume of water over time that is intended to be moved? Based on the picture of the water collection, seems like a minimal of 8-12 inch pipe would be required.
A8: Water gradually enters and collects in the central drain basin which a 4 inch pipe can easily keep up with. Even if we had a significant rain storm, the 4 inch pipe would still be able to move significant amounts of water away while allowing some absorption into the ground in the central drain basin as it was originally designed for. We are requesting a 4 inch pipe only.
Q9: What are the testing requirements for this project?
Q10: Keynote 6 calls out Curb & Gutter where the spill curb is located, but there are no inlets called out. Can you confirm if inlets will need to be placed?
Q11: Are we to assume all the asphalt shown in the matchlined parking lot area will need to be replaced? Or be replaced only in the area being disrupted? The entire area is shown as needing to be replaced on C1.01, so we may want to clarify how much asphalt to price out so everyone’s bidding the same and we don’t all bid high.
Q12: Will additional chain link fence be required as shown on the plans?
Q13: Are we to assume everything called out within the matchline areas should be included in our bid price (i.e. curb & gutter, sidewalk, vehicle swing gate, pedestrian gate in the chin link fence, pedestrian ramps with truncated domes, etc.)? If not, can we get sheet C1.01 re-issued with the keynotes blacked out that are not in scope? The blue bubbles don’t delineate scope for us.
Q14: If the 3 bollards that are being called out at the top left of sheet C1.01 (Ketynote 18) are part of our scope, I need to know diameter, length, and grade of steel.
Q15 My understanding is that all we need to come in and do is sawcut, directional bore, and install the 200’ of 4-inch drain line. There are other items being called out and it’s causing confusion on what to include/cover. We don’t want to be on the high end because we’re accounting for all of it shown, but don’t want to be on the low side due to lack of clarification. I know the as-built drawing issued shows more scope than what is probably needed, so this may help clear things up for us all.
A9-A15: The plans were from the original build of the parking lot, and were for reference only. They are not intended to be used explicitly for anything in the scope of work. The need to simply follow the scope of work. There will be horizontal drilling only. No saw-cutting, trenching, building of curbs, sidewalks, or fence unless the contractor damages existing. It’s a very simple project :
“WORK TO BE PERFORMED BY CONTRACTOR. Install approximately 200 feet of 4-inch drainage pipe in the central drainage basin to the retention pond located east of BLDG 1 (Newell). Pipe will be horizontally drilled from central drainage basin in the rear parking lot to release excess water into the retention pond. Inlet of pipe will be grated to prevent debris intrusion and positioned at or just below grade. Drainage pipe will slope towards the retention pond, to quickly evacuate excess water from the central drainage basin.”
