STATEMENT OF WORK

Wireline geophysical logging services and hydrogeologic data interpretation at two open borehole sites in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, 2021.

I. General Information:

a. INTRODUCTION: the USGS Research Drilling Program (RDP) has the need for a vendor to provide wireline geophysical logging services and hydrogeologic data interpretation at two open borehole sites, which will be drilled in the Los Angeles metropolitan area during calendar year 2021. The vendor will need to provide all geophysical logging tools, wireline setup, and logging staff. Required log surveys include: Combinable Magnetic Resonance (CMR), Spectral Gamma Ray (HNGS), Sonic Scanner Acoustic Scanning Platform (MSIP), High-Definition Formation Microimager (FMI), Induction array, Micro-resistivity, and caliper tools. The sites are located within the City of Cerritos and Paramount (California).

b. OBJECTIVE: to collect high-quality downhole geophysical logs from two 2,100 foot deep open boreholes; to process and quality assure data in a timely manner; and to provide meaningful hydrogeologic interpretation of results specific to the design and construction of a multiple-well (nested) monitoring site.

II. Background:

USGS RDP will begin boring and constructing two multiple-depth groundwater monitoring sites in the next 2-9 months. Figure 1 and 2 show the regional and local-scale location of the proposed monitoring sites. Successful completion of this project work requires that the boreholes are surveyed with a specific variety of geophysical tools to a depth of 2,100 feet and processed for hydrogeologic interpretation in a timely manner.

Table 1 shows the approximate location of the site, the estimated start month and duration of the project, and the estimated time the logging services will be required. The project startup is known within 1 month; once underway the vendor will be advised on a daily basis as to the exact survey dates. Uncertainty with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and unexpected equipment failures could delay work, thereby extending the project start or duration.

The borehole will be drilled using direct mud rotary techniques to a depth of approximately 2,100 feet below land surface. The borehole diameter will telescope down and vary between 9.875 and 7.875 inches depending on depth. Vendor will advise if a larger diameter hole is required to accommodate the logging tools. Borehole fluid will be a mixture of bentonite drilling mud (certified safe for water wells) and potable water. The borehole fluid is mixed with water well approved polymers and is not oil based.

The drill rig will be an Atlas Copco TH60. It is equipped with multiple hoist lines that can be used to hang sheaves or pully blocks. Additional sheaves or pully blocks may be secured to the drill table using hoisting straps. The drill rig mast is set up to accommodate 20-foot drill pipe. A portion of the drill site will be cleared for geophysical logging activities. Space to accommodate a large Class B truck and axillary pickup truck will be provided. The area will be cleared to allow direct access from the geophysical logging truck to the borehole.

III. Work Requirements

a. Vendor is expected to have experience completing this type of work. Vendor may be required to provide proof of successfully completing these integrated tasks including, but not limited to, providing references.

b. Geophysical logging of a 2,100 foot deep open borehole. Required logs are Combinable Magnetic Resonance (CMR), Spectral Gamma Ray (HNGS), Sonic Scanner Acoustic Scanning Platform (MSIP), High-Definition Formation Micro-imager (FMI), Induction array, Micro-resistivity, and caliper.

c. As soon as possible after USGS RDP obtains total depth, acquire borehole data using the geophysical logging tools listed above in (b). Vendor will receive daily updates to the drilling schedule once RDP has begun work at the site. Vendor will be notified 48 hours in advance of when logging services will be required.

d. A nuclear magnetic resonance log will be collected to estimate total porosity of the formations including free fluid and bound fluid and will be displayed in either percent porosity or V/V units. A multi-spectral and natural gamma log will measure natural gamma radiation and will be displayed in gAPI units. A spontaneous potential log will measure the spontaneous potential of the formations and will be displayed in millivolts. A multiple-depth (minimum of 2, long and short) array induction logs will measure the resistivity of the formations and will be displayed in ohm-meters. The caliper log will measure the borehole diameter in inches utilizing a multi-arm design.

e. Data will be recorded at maximum interval of 0.25 feet throughout the entire borehole. All data provided in final format will be calibrated.

f. Perform an integrated log analysis, using the Elemental Log Analysis (ELAN) program and as many of the applicable processed logs as possible, to model the near wellbore substrate lithology/mineralogy and pore fluids.

g. Fully process and quality assure the geophysical tool measurements to account for borehole mudcake variations, formation and environmental conditions, and precisely depth match all log display products.

h. Provide a preliminary compilation of geophysical logs listed above, within 36 hours of the final tool survey, useful for identification of permeable zones, hydrogeologic interpretation of the formations, and the immediate design of screened intervals for the monitoring wells.

i. Participate in a conference call within 48 hours of the final tool survey to describe the overall quality of the log data, explain noteworthy features of the geophysical logs, and provide any insight on geology and hydrogeology of formations encountered in the borehole.

j. Final processed data will be provided in paper and digital formats. Paper plots will be provided on continuous paper in either 5in=100ft and 2in=100ft scales. Digital prints will be in PDF format and will be in both 5in=100ft and 2in=100ft scales. All data will be provided in LAS version 1.2 or newer.

k. Vendor will submit a final summary report which includes a discussion of the data acquisition, data quality-control measures and assessment, data processing, results and discussion, references, figures and tables, within 90 days of the final tool survey.

l. Vendor is expected to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

IV. Supporting Information (for vendor)

m. Final borehole depth is estimated and may increase by 300 ft. Vendor should prepare quote to include fixed and/or flat rates and per foot charges. If logging services are required for more or less than 2,100 feet the final payment will be based on a per foot charge plus all flat rates.

n. No Government-owned property or services will be provided to the vendor. With the exception of an on-site generator and a portable toilet available for use, the vendor will provide all related equipment needed to complete the Work Requirements.

o. The full PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE will begin as early as March 8, 2021 and end not later than December 15, 2021.
