About this file

This document is an Attachment A Questions and Answers (Q&A) for Request for Quotations (RFQ) 140G0225Q0075, addressing laboratory analytical services for the USGS Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center in Denver, Colorado. The Q&A focuses on a specific technical inquiry about the analytical method for Lead (Pb) isotope ratio measurements, with the USGS clarifying that high-resolution inductively coupled mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS) was selected to compare results with more precise analyses, as outlined in the performance work statement's introduction and background sections. The RFQ requires 420 Pb isotope analyses using HR-ICP-MS on soil samples, with the methodology choice tied to a benchmark study comparing accuracy and turnaround time.

RFQ 140G0225Q0075

Laboratory analytical services to provide Lead (Pb) isotope ratio measurements analyses on soil samples for the USGS Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center

(GGGSC), Denver, Colorado.

1. Question #1:

“We're currently reviewing the RFQ for Sol_140G0225Q0075 and have a question regarding the analytical methods specified. In the Scope of Work, it mentions a requirement for 420 Pb isotopeanalyses using HR-ICP-MS.

Could you provide some insight into why HR-ICP-MS was selected for these analyses, rather than other similar methods such as MC-ICP-MS?

I understand the project likely involves a benchmark study comparing the accuracy and turn aroundtime of HR-ICP-MS and TIMS. We're interested in understanding if there are specific capabilities of HR-ICP-MS that make it necessary for this project and that MC-

ICP-MS would not be able to provide.

Any information you can share about the reasoning behind the instrumentation choice would begreatly appreciated.”

USGS’s Responses:

The USGS requires the analyses be completed by high resolution inductively coupled mass spectrometry as described in the first sentence of section 3.0 (Scope) of the performance work statement (page 5 of RFQ 140G0225Q0075) and the first sentence of section 4.2 (technical requirements) (page 5) as the purpose is to compare results of this specific methodology with more precise analyses as described in sections 1.0

(introduction) and 2.0 (background) (page 5).
