Statement Of Need

Description Of Need:

The Florence Bascom Geoscience Center has a need for a handheld x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer for use by team members in the field and in the laboratory.

The team has no such equipment at present. The XRF will facilitate sample collection in the field for a variety of sample media and provide a rapid screening tool to use in combination with our X-ray powder diffractometer to identify minerals.

Specifications/Salient Characteristics:

(1) New handheld XRF with geometrically optimized large area drift detector for mining and soil analysis of soils, sediments, rocks, slags, precipitates, powders prepared for XRD analysis, and mineral concentrates. Applications for exploration, soils, major industrial and rare-earth elements, and grade control.

(2) Must be able to analyze for the following elements; elements in last column (bold) are custom rare-earth (REE) analytical package. ALSO MUST BE CAPABLE OF ANALYZING Mg, Mn, Al, Si,P,S, Cl without the use of a vacuum or other purge system.
