About this file
This document is a Salient Characteristics description for a high vacuum gas sorption analyzer. The U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Geology, Energy, and Minerals Science Center (GEMSC) requires this instrument to measure specific surface area and pore size distribution of geologic materials, which is critical for assessing hydrocarbon reservoirs and storage of greenhouse gases and hydrogen. The required specifications include high vacuum performance, continuous saturation pressure measurement, options for various analysis gases, micropore volume detection, surface area range, and advanced data analysis software. The instrument must be new, with a one-year warranty and three years of annual maintenance included.
The related federal contract opportunity is Solicitation Number 140G0124Q0256 for a "GAS SORPTION ANALYZER" issued by the USGS Office of Acquisitions and Grants. This is a total small business set-aside with a NAICS code of 334516 and a size standard of 1,000 employees. The solicitation will be issued on 08/02/2024 with quotes due on 08/09/2024, and the anticipated award date is 08/14/2024. Vendors must be registered in SAM.gov to be awarded the contract.

140G0124Q0256 Salient Characteristics Description of Need:
A. Introduction:
This proposal is for the purchase of a high vacuum gas sorption analyzer to measure specific surface area and pore size distribution of geologic materials. The Geology, Energy, and Minerals Science Center (GEMSC) currently does not have the capabilities to make these types of measurements and must send samples to external labs with often cost prohibitive service fees. Characterizing the surface area and pore size distribution in rocks is a critical dataset for understanding the amount of accessible volume in a rock (pore space) available for hosting geologic fluids (e.g., hydrocarbons, hydrogen, CO2) and the range of pore sizes. This type if information is critical for assessments of hydrocarbon bearing reservoir rocks and for storage of green house gases like CO2 and green energy fuels like hydrogen. Procurement of a gas adsorption instrument will be beneficial to several GEMSC research groups such as CO2 and hydrogen storage assessments, carbon mineralization, hydrocarbon assessments by providing critical information on rock storage capacity and fluid mobility in the subsurface.
Specifications/Salient Characteristics:
Salient Characteristics that must be met are the following:
High Vacuum Gas Sorption Analyzer:
· physical sorption analyzer producing measurements for determining specific surface area and pore size distribution from 3.5 to 5000 Ångstroms
· continuous saturation pressure measurement capability
· Option for different analysis gasses: N2, O2, Ar, Kr, CO2, CO, H2, or any non-corrosive gases
· Micropore volume: Detectable within 0.0001 cc/g
· Surface Area Range: 0.0005 m2/g and up
· Includes computer and software for advanced data analysis and instrument control
· Includes all required pressure regulators.
· Includes installation and training.
· Simultaneous degassing and analysis.
· Includes reference material (standard)
Miscellaneous:
· The instrument must be new and a model currently in production. Refurbished or demonstrator instruments are not acceptable.
· The instrument warranty must be one-year parts, labor, and travel.
· Must include at least 1 day of additional training or application consultation (either on-site of off-site) if requested.
· Three years’ worth of annual maintenance.
