B.3. Statement of Work
B.3.1. Background
The U.S. Geological Survey St Petersburg Science Center requires the purchase of a Tuttnauer 62L benchtop automated steam autoclave (model 3850 EL or ML) OR EQUAL for the Environmental Health Microbiology Lab.
This will replace an existing older autoclave that is starting to show signs of wear and can no longer be repaired.
Autoclave sterilization is required to provide sterile equipment and media/reagents that are essential components to any microbiological protocol, and to decontaminate lab supplies and samples after analysis to maintain a safe lab environment. The work in this lab is partially funded through EPA and USDA grants and partnerships, and therefore must follow strict guidelines in safety and sterility. An autoclave is a key component to that goal. A benchtop front loading and fully automated unit is needed to fit into the existing lab space, and by not requiring plumbing or drain, will be able to function in a variety of locations depending on need. A minimum size chamber is required to sterilize key components of the protocols used in this lab, therefore a larger size unit is necessary.
B.3.2. Salient Characteristics
Benchtop steam autoclave, frontloading only
Fully automatic (independent of a water supply or drain), no plumbing or drain connection required. Must include an internal reservoir and pump system
Must have both wet and dry cycles, appropriate for both liquid and dry sterilization, such as nutrient broth, microbiological media, buffer solutions, pipette tips, tubes and filters.
Biohazardous waste sterilization safeguards (filter system)
Internal stainless steel chamber with tray, minimum size 62L, minimum diameter 14 inches and minimum depth 19 inches. Able to fit 1L Erlenmeyer flasks and 1L media bottles upright in the chamber when placed on the internal tray
Cycle information printed and stored for documentation requirements (built-in printer)
Safety aspects: door lock and steam sensors to prevent opening of chamber while pressurized or at temperature and to prevent a cycle from starting if the door is not secured properly. Safety valve to prevent over-pressurizing of chamber
Valve to allow for draining of the water chamber
Programs for operation should be fully customizable to allow for control of time and temperature
Cycle information recovery in the case of a power outage
