Questions and Answers:
Question 1: How do you want to treat white pine throughout the project area?
Answer 1: All white pine of any size should be removed.
Question 2: How should the fire breaks be cleared?
Answer 2: Fire breaks should be mowed approximately 10-15 feet wide to allow a 10-foot wide truck to navigate the area. All shrubs should be mowed to the ground. Trees should be mulched down to no less than 2 inches from the ground so vehicles can safely drive over them. Fire breaks should be installed on the outside edge of the shaded fuel break and meander somewhat to not create a straight visual corridor.
Question 3: How should we handle snags?
Answer 3: In general, try to leave approximately 3 snags per acre, for example- 1 exceeding 18 inches DBH, and two exceeding 12 inches DBH. Remove all snags within 100 feet of a firebreak
Question 4: Are there any sensitive areas for cultural resources?
Answer 4: We are in the process of consulting with SHPO and USFWS cultural resources. There might be sensitive areas we need to avoid for the project depending on the outcome of the consultation. We will update the project map prior to the start of the project. We need to avoid disturbing stone walls and areas that have stacked stones which could be historically significant.
Question 5: Which trees should we target for removing bigger ones verses smaller ones?
Answer 5: Any hardwood or pitch pine that are unhealthy, suppressed, weak, or show signs of insect infestation should be targeted for removal. Contractor can make judgment call based on professional opinion on which trees to remove, as long as the overall tree spacing and basal area listed in the scope of work is adhered to for the shaded fuel break and savannah area.
Question 6: How many trees should we remove from the savannah treatment area?
Answer 6: Not looking for a clear cut. Want variable spacing so ok to leave clumps of trees in certain areas-probably where rocks are. Overall looking for 20-75 trees per acre, and a residual basal area about 30 sq feet per acre (approximately 20-60% canopy cover).
Question 7: Would this steep slope be included in the treatment?
Answer 7: Very steep slopes could lead to soil disturbance, thinning along the ridge could be tough. For hillside areas, you can reach as far as you can with equipment from the bottom and top of hill to avoid driving on the slope. Prior to the start of the project, we will adjust the project boundaries as necessary to take into account topography, and we will flag the areas and provide a final map with adjustments.
Question 8: Do you want to scarify and areas for pitch pine regeneration?
Answer 8: Some light scarification could be beneficial as is it does promote pitch pine regeneration. However, we need to consult with cultural resources first to ensure we don’t impact any sensitive archeological sites. If they approve, we wouldn’t want the entire area to be scarified. Patches here and there could be ok- pending approval from cultural resources.
Question 9: Should we break up mountain laural understory?
Answer 9: Yes, we will want to break up the mountain laurel understory. Don’t need to mow 100 percent, want to reduce the continuity of surface fuels to 25-50% random coverage, so that we can safely burn the area in the future.
