About this file
This statement of work describes technical assistance activities required by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Montana Ecological Services Field Office. The selected vendor will analyze up to 100 bear tissue and hair samples for concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, calcium, copper, lead, magnesium, mercury, selenium, and zinc using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Sample preparation must be performed using a 20% nitric acid concentration. The vendor must deliver the results electronically in spreadsheet format including all samples, blanks, quality control samples, and associated metadata. The vendor must also assist with data interpretation, statistical analysis, and manuscript preparation related to the test results and provide follow-up technical communication to the agency. The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number 140FS224Q0062 for Montana grizzly bear tissue contaminant analysis services being procured by the U.S. Department of Interior Fish and Wildlife Service.

140FS224Q0062 Grizzly Bear Tissue and Hair Contaminant Analysis Page 1 of 1 USFWS Montana Ecological Services Field Office
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), Region 6, Montana Ecological Services Field Office has a need to analyze bear tissue and hair samples (n = up to 100 samples total in one sample shipment) for metal concentrations using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-
MS).
This Statement of Work describes technical assistance activities to be performed by the vendor for FWS including sample analyses, data interpretation, and manuscript preparations.
These activities are building upon ongoing collaborations to quantify the potential impacts of anthropogenic contaminants on various sentinel species throughout Montana. The vendor will be analyzing the concentrations of a suite of elements in bear hair and tissue samples collected by FWS bear researchers. Many of the samples will not exceed a volume of 2mL.
Tasks will include:
1) Sample preparation and ICP-MS analyses of bear hair and tissue for the following elements:
a. Arsenic
b. Cadmium
c. Calcium
d. Copper
e. Lead
f. Magnesium
g. Mercury
h. Selenium
i. Zinc
2) The nitric acid digestion of samples should be performed with a 20% nitric acid concentration.
3) Delivery of results, in electronic form (spreadsheet.xls), to FWS including all samples, blanks, and QC samples. The spreadsheet should also contain:
a. Date analyzed
b. Detection limits (clearly identified as MDL, LOQ, LOD, etc.)
c. Calculated % recoveries for SRMs
d. Summary of data normalization
The file should contain metadata to include samples used for the pooled QC and any modifications made to the sample (e.g., filtered, diluted).
4) Assistance with data interpretation, statistical analyses, and manuscript preparation. The contractor must provide follow-up technical communication to the USFWS concerning results by phone or email.
