About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document for RFQ 140F1S26Q0143 issued by the Fish and Wildlife Service for Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge culvert supplies. The document addresses two technical clarifications regarding precast culvert specifications. The first question clarifies that the 12-inch wide galvanized plate should be cast on the outside wall of the culvert and positioned flush with the exterior surface. The second question addresses concerns about a stoplog channel that extends above the precast wall section, with the government confirming that the channel is designed to protrude above the top of the precast to facilitate site staff installation of stop logs, and that reduced wall thickness in this partially buried section is acceptable based on successful implementation of the same design at other locations.

Culvert Supplies Q&A

1. Please verify where the 12” wide galvanized plate is located, inside wall or outside wall.

The 12” wide galvanized plate is the be cast on the outside of the wall and should be flush with the rest of the outside surface of the culvert.

2. The stoplog channel that is to cast into the section exceeds height of precast wall and does not provide adequate wall thickness for structural integrity.

The stoplog channel is intended to extend above the top level of the pre-cast to aid site staff in installation of the stop logs. As far as the thickness of the wall in that area, the section that has the stoplog channel cast into it will only be partially buried and not subject to full lateral forces of being fully buried. This same design has been completed multiple times at other locations and has not had any issues with the reduced wall thickness in this section of pipe.
