About this file

This is a Questions and Answers amendment to a federal solicitation for vacuum-compatible stages issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a component of the Department of Commerce.

The amendment addresses seven vendor inquiries regarding technical specifications and requirements for a rotation stage assembly. Key clarifications include: (1) full-step resolution of less than 0.01 degrees is a firm requirement, with NIST planning to use microstepping to achieve smaller increments; (2) the working distance or center of rotation must be 65 millimeters or greater, as this dimension aligns with existing optical elements, with larger values accommodable through precision spacers but smaller values not acceptable; (3) specific accuracy and repeatability requirements are not stated, as high-resolution stages with stepper motors are expected to meet performance needs, with typical operational speeds around 1 degree per second; (4) dual-shaft motors are required to enable independent stage movement without power and to accommodate potential future encoder additions; (5) cable length must be greater than or equal to 12 inches, a firm requirement; (6) connectors must be vacuum-compatible; and (7) custom products are acceptable. This amendment extends the solicitation response deadline to accommodate vendor questions.

Amendment 0001:

The purpose of this amendment is to answer questions submitted.

Question 1: Is the full-step resolution of less than 0.01° a firm requirement for the rotation stage?

NIST Answer: Yes this is a firm requirement for a full step resolution of 0.01 deg. This is needed as NIST plans to microstep to achieve smaller increments.

Question 2: Could you clarify what the 65 mm of working distance means? Is this the same as the centre of rotation?

NIST Answer: The working distance, or center of rotation, must be 65 mm or greater. That value [65mm] was chosen such that the center of the existing optical element which will be supported by the required/sought Stage Assembly, and the tilt (aka swivel) stage’s working distance coincide. A greater value can be accommodated through the use of a precision spacer, but a smaller value cannot.

Question 3: Are there any requirements for accuracy, repeatability, or speed?

NIST Answer: Since a high-resolution stage coupled to a stepper motor should meet our accuracy and repeatability requirements, we chose not to specifically specify them. For instance, we move our devices at relatively modest speeds (~1 deg/sec) .

Question 4: Could you clarify the purpose for the dual-shaft motors versus single-shaft motors?

NIST Answer: The purpose of the dual-shaft motor is to be able to (a) move the stage independently of power and (b) allow for the potential future addition of an encoder.

Question 5: Is a cable length greater than 12 inches a firm requirement?

NIST Answer: Yes, greater or equal to 12 inches

Question 6: Do the connectors also need to be vacuum-compatible?

NIST Answer: Yes.

Question 7: Are custom products acceptable?

NIST Answer: Yes
