Nalgene Bottles

BACKGROUND

The NIST Inorganic Chemical Metrology Group is responsible for developing, critically evaluating, and applying techniques for the identification and measurement of inorganic and organometallic species using X-ray, optical, and mass spectrometry as well as classical analytical methods, pH, and electroanalytical methods. Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) and analytical methods development support a variety of industries including advanced materials, cements, ores, and fossil fuels, as well as clinical, food, and environmental analyses. The group develops and maintains primary national standards for elemental and anionic concentrations, pH, electrolytic conductivity, and isotopic abundance.

The third production run of SRM 1640b Trace Elements in Water is being produced in 2021. The SRM is packaged in Nalgene Nunc narrow mouth High-density polyethylene (HDPE) 250 mL bottles. The bottles as manufactured, are not clean enough to use for this solution. The bottles require acid washing in 10% by volume trace metal grade nitric acid before use.

SPECIFICATIONS

The Contractor shall provide 6000 Nalgene narrow-mouth HDPE 250mL bottles with caps, Part #2099-0008.

• The Contractor will soak bottles in 10% by volume trace metal grade nitric acid overnight or longer, rinsed and dried. The bottles caps must also follow the same procedure.

• The Contractor will use water to rinse bottles and caps after the acid cleaning which is of at least Type III or better purity as defined by ASTM D1193 – 06.

• The Contractor will dry the bottles and caps in an environment which will minimize redeposition of impurities from the air. A general description of the precautions for reducing redeposition of impurities during drying will be presented with quotation.

• After drying, the Contractor will cap bottles and place in unused plastic bags for shipment.

• The Contractor will complete the cleaning, drying and shipment to NIST within a period of 45 days from award of contract. Bottles should be delivered to NIST within 60 days of award of contract.
