Statement of Work
A Study of Information-Centric Network (ICN)-based Internet of
Things (IoT) with Wireless Network Deployments and Testbed
Experimentation
I. BACKGROUND
The Advanced Network Technology Division (ANTD) at the National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST) is collaborating with the Intelligent Systems Division (ISD) at NIST to develop a best-practice guideline for deployment of wireless technology in smart manufacturing environments.
Much of ANTD’s efforts have concentrated on wireless network design and deployments in industrial environments as well as developing innovative information dissemination approaches to enable reliable and secure wireless transmissions of sensing and control message updates in manufacturing plants.
ANTD has developed a software evaluation framework for wireless data transmissions in a standard chemical production plant and evaluated individual packet receptions in harsh industrial environments. ANTD has also conducted channel usage analysis based on passive channel measurements in different industrial plants and conducted a comprehensive survey of existing and potential wireless control applications in various industrial Internet of Things
(IoT) scenarios. ANTD wishes to leverage our past work to deploy latest information-centric network (ICN) techniques to supplement existing IP-based factory communication platform and build a wireless testbed to explore, measure and demonstrate the key technical elements in the deployment of ICN-IoT solutions.
The main objective of this new project is to build an ICN-based IoT testbed that demonstrates representative use cases of wireless control for manufacturing industry. This would also require expanding current model library in the simulation-based evaluation framework to evaluate testbed design proposals before actual implementations.
II. SCOPE OF WORK
The Contractor shall work closely in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to design, build, and test a wireless IoT testbed to mimic a typical discrete system control use case in manufacturing industries.
The Contractor shall develop an ICN solution to enable ICN-based information dissemination in the testbed architecture. The Contractor shall also assess the proposed ICN solution for the target use case through simulations to evaluate the performance of ICN-IoT with wireless connections.
III. SPECIFIC TASKS
The Contractor shall be responsible for project oversight, equipment, administration, and technical execution of this contract. The Contractor shall deliver a report on representative use cases of wireless control application in manufacturing industry and new simulation software modules with the following specific tasks in the twelve months of the project.
1. Support the deployment of an ICN-based IoT testbed in the EL lab that mimic assembly lines with robots. Participate as part of a team to design and prototype with sensor/actuator boards.
2. Model and simulate the use case using tools such as NDNsim (in NS-3) or OMNET++
3. Design experiments in simulation and testbed of Task 1 & 2 to conduct performance measurements and comparisons with non-ICN technologies, and suggest protocol enhancements.
4. Conduct wireless network study to achieve scalability of the IoT network to a large number of devices through appropriate approaches in communication layers such as MAC, network, transport, and application. Evaluate these approaches in the industrial applications of Task 1 as a use case as well as other use cases such as deployable networks for disaster/emergency response.
5. Document the results and findings as appropriate, particularly in the form of technical paper(s) in relevant technical conference.
