(16) Description:

NOAA ESRL CSD requires thirty (30) small optical particles counters (OPCs) for use in field research projects. The required OPCs are specifically the Printed Optical Particle Spectrometer (POPS) that was developed in the ESRL CSD lab and that has been and is currently being used for other ongoing projects. The instruments are needed for two projects currently being pursued involving 1) measurements of aerosol vertical profiles as a component of balloon sondes for stratospheric observation and satellite validation [requirements: weight < 1 kg, power

consumption < 6 W, 100% minimum detectable particle size < 150 nm], and 2) extended aerosol size distribution measurements as components of a spatially dense distributed network of sites for investigating aerosol variability and assessing error in model-measurement comparison due to scale differences. The Printed Optical Particle Spectrometer which was developed in the NOAA lab is now being sold as a commercial item under the name Portable Optical Particle Spectrometer.
