1305M225Q0201 Fume Hood Repairs – Questions / Answers

1. Is there a print of the Hood?

Answer: Attached are Mechanicals, Hood Documents, and Plumbing Schematics, etc.

2. Is there a print of the Duct System?

Answer: Attached and Perchloric Acid Hood is on Pg. 4 or Drawing M1.23.

3. Does this require full welding, or can flourosilicone be utilized for gasket flange connections?

Answer: Because this fume hood has been used with heated perchloric acid, the ductwork must be made of continuously welded stainless steel. Gasketed or flanged joints—even with fluoroelastomer gaskets—are not allowed because they can trap residues, leak under pressure, or degrade, creating severe safety hazards. This is a strict safety requirement. Although the Hood has now been deemed safe for repairs by a contracted decontamination company, we wish to maintain stainless steel welding due to its future use once the Hood is fully operational again.

4. Does NOAA require 2 people to install? This is relatively easy job for one person.

Answer: Yes, NOAA/HML requires at least two qualified personnel on site for this work.

One to perform the welding/installation, and one as fire watch/safety support. This is consistent with OSHA hot work rules, NFPA perchloric Hood standards, and NOAA’s facility safety policies. A one-person installation would not meet safety compliance. The scope requires sliding new fabricated duct sections down from the roof to the Hood.

Even if “mechanically easy,” safe handling per OSHA lifting guidelines requires at least two workers for positioning and securing.
